Are we all on the same page with... (Mega spoilers)

1. This was the first hunt

-hiring a consultant. The way it goes down they all (apart from.swank and the old couple) appear pretty useless. You get the impression they've done a bit of shooting before (and archery in the case of the girl). I wouldn't say they were particularly proficient most of the targets they hit were pretty much completely stationary

- Swank's reaction at losing her job.incredulity leading to anger about being fired for a (completely horrible and tasteless) joke.

-it works better from a story point of view. The Uber liberals hitting back at the conservative conspiracy theorists for spreading rumours about something that wasn't happening, by doing that very thing. The irony and hypocrisy is something else

2. Don wasn't in on it

This one is a bit contentious, my only arguements are I feel Don could have taken Crystal out at multiple points (if he was a plant). And although he didn't do a lot, he did kind of help her divert the others attention Also that whole Athena on the radio bit I think he was just scared that he wouldn't be believed. Doesnt make sense for Athena to call him out on the radio. You know, unless she just decided to turn on him. Hmm

It's clear enough this was the first hunt, precisely because the hunters were so bad at it. They threw a grenade without pulling the pin. They learned combat techniques from a movie consultant instead of an actual veteran (he was a real soldier, but Crystal had actually been "in the shit").

I think only a few posters, on this board at least, think otherwise.

Even some of the right-wing "prey" didn't believe "Manorgate" was real; they seemed shocked that it was actually happening.

And I definitely agree Don wasn't in on it. As you point out, he had many opportunities to try to kill Crystal (though he'd have likely failed). More importantly, he allowed the hunters to be ambushed and slaughtered, which serves no purpose at all if he'd been one of them himself.

I think Athena "fake-exposed" Don to convince herself that the "deplorable" were scummy enough to turn on each other. What she didn't know is that Crystal wasn't an actual deplorable.
