Wow...starting the 2020 box office with a BANG

No telling how much this will make both domestically and internationally.

Looking at all the studios slates this year the only question is who will end the year at #1...Universal or Warner Bros?

reply

Isn't it, technically, a 2019's movie?

reply

Sure...but it's main box-office run will be in 2020.

reply

It had a limited US opening on Christmas, so it qualifies for current awards.
Rise of Skywalker will be included in both 2019 and 2020 totals, but overall only the final gross will be used.

reply

Yeah, it hap'ens to a lot of movies that come out at the end of the year. Some studios do it on pirpose to be as close as possible from the Oscar ceremony, and still qualify for the ending year.

reply

It’s a movie I can’t wait to see

reply

is it a remake of Dunkirk?
that movie was loud as hell

reply

No

reply

it looks just like Dunkirk,
is Harry Styles in this one, too?

reply

No

reply

Keep trolling...you’re on a roll now....

reply

This is a movie that deserves to make good box office

reply

> who will end the year at #1...Universal or Warner Bros?

Hilarious! Disney will be #1 for all eternity. Unless Walt was actually a Nazi pedophile.

reply

Your perception has been seriously skewed. Disney shot it's wad last year...it's over.

reply

Disney made a killing in 2019, so many movies that made over a billion , 2020 will be more of the same , it’s who will finish 2nd between WB and Universal, top spot will be Disney

reply

No no no furiousstyles 2020 is looking very weak for Disney compared to WB and Universal.

Universal

Dr Doolittle - Will bomb, although might do well internationally, a bit like Alice did for Johnny Depp. It's the transformers effect. about 400m total.
Fast and Furious 9 - a billion
Minions - These usually make a billion
Bill & Ted - Seems like a couple of decades too late for this. But Keanu Reaves is on fire. Really depends on how good it is. anywhere between 300m and 1 billion.

WB

Birds of Prey - Not sure, depends if it's good or not. Could go either way. R-rating probably limits it's potential to 700-800m range.
Wonder Woman 1984 - A billion
The Conjuring 3 - 300m
The Witches - did a Raold Dahl movie ever make bank? I can't think of one.
Godzilla vs Kong - Skull Island was more well received than its Box Office would suggest. The novelty might elevate this above the Box Office of and of the Kong or Godzilla movies, but it really depends on whether it is any good or not.
Dune - Not sure about this. Have to wait for the first trailer. Don't see any reason to think it will be a hit at this point.

Disney

Mulan - a billion probably
The New mutants - eh...300m?
Black Widow - a billion probably
Artemis Fowl - This movie seems to have had problems, and the trailer looked goofy and weird. I think it will be one of Disney's misses(which means about 500m)
Jungle Cruise - This looks terrible, but so do most Dwayne Johnson movies. 500m is the floor. Could make a billion, who knows.
The Eternals - a billion probably

Did I miss anything? I'm not sure about the Christmas slate. Looks weak. It looks like Universal has 2-3 potential billion dollar films. WB has 1-2. Disney has 2-3. It think Maverick could top the year.

......As far as more movie franchises and expected blockbuster hits go:
The Call of the Wild (Disney/Fox)
The Invisible Man (Universal)
Candyman (Universal)
The Purge 5 (Universal)
Tenet (WB)
The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (WB)
West Side Story (Disney/Fox)
Tom and Jerry (WB)

Then...:
Trolls 2 and Croods 2 from Dreamworks/Universal.
Scoob from WB.
Bob's Burger Movie (I'm surprised this is a thing) from Disney/Fox.
Onward, Soul, and Raya and the Last Dragon from the Disney and Pixar animation divisions.
