By first part, do you mean the murdering of Dani’s parents? If so, the entire film has an undercurrent/theme of the said murders and the underlying trauma which Dani is unable to process until the end of the film. Not saying that her processing is that of a heathy one but that smile in the last scene is her being released from her inability to move past her trauma.

It's a comparison between the lack of social intimacy in modern Western culture and the family-like camaraderie of the remote Commune. While this paints the pagan cult in a positive light, it also shows its shortcomings, to say the least. After the shocking deaths of the two older members of the cult at the cliff, Christian -- being a cultural anthropology student -- tries to keep an open mind, pointing out the dubiousness of putting old people into nursing homes and pumping them full of meds 24/7.
