I kept expecting him to show up alive and be part of the scheme. Clearly a red herring. But I wonder if they might circle back to that in a future film. Could even be a prequel. Blanc said that Harlan knew his father or grandfather. Maybe that guy was also a detective and could also be played by Craig.

What are you talking about? I don't remember a dead son.

That's because they only ever mentioned him. Toni Collette was only related by marriage to that dead son who died 15 years ago and they never explain further than that

I don't think it was a red herring so much as a way to put Collette's character in the position of being part of the family yet not a "full family member."
