Did you see Nick Furys old girl friend?

Yes..it is Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, as played by Elaine. The Contessa has a long Marvel history involving Fury and Cap.

Personally I think it was a bad casting choice.

Who would have been better?

reply

Someone more exotic. Julia Dreyfuss is kind of frumpy for this type of role. Plus people seem to be treating it as a joke. They're expecting her to do something comedic with it.

Nadia Bjorlin might have been a better fit. But I don't see people considering an actress whose career is mostly soap operas getting a shot at this.

Are you seriously suggesting a 40y.o. actress as a gf of a 72y.o. man?? 🙄

No, I meant which actress around Julia L-D's age would you propose instead.

reply

I was just talking to my wife about our conversation. She immediately came out with Bridgette Nielsen. That might have been an interesting choice.

reply

She has the look, but I don't think she could handle the role. The Contessa is a conniving, brilliant character and Nielsen seems to wooden and one-dimensional for the part.

reply

Well, in fairness, Julia L-D is a much better actress!

I don't have the problem with her that everyone else seems to, I don't think she is necessarily "comedic" - she has great range. If I had to nitpick, then she is kinda too tiny for any kind of hero, but then like I said in some other thread, she is actually perfect to play some evil aristocrat. Plus, if the character is supposed to be Italian, she is a much better fit.

And I gotta give it to her: she looks great for 60.

Btw, what's the story with her name? Why does she say to call her Val and not to call her Val?

reply

The thing about superpowers is that physical size doesn't matter, Black Widow, Scarlet Witch, and Bruce Banner are all on the small side (and Tony Stark is average size at best), but they have scary powers so nobody cares. I'm willing to assume the same of Val.

So I'm looking forward to seeing what Dreyfuss does with the character, so far all she's done is show astonishing levels of chutzpah when dealing with a mentally unstable person with superpowers, which is a good start. I'm hoping that season 2 will show her as the kind of fun villain I like, maybe her background in comedy will help her give a villain the sort of camp edge that Loki has, and that too many Marvel villains lack.

I was just thinking about it again, and if she is supposed to be specifically Italian in origin, Monica Bellucci would have worked.

reply

She might have been too expensive?

reply

Nah, if anything I think Julia L-D would have been the more expensive one - she is much more known to American audiences.

reply

Sure but I would think Bellicco would ask for European film wages, which should he higher than US TV wages.

reply

?

Where are you getting that from? 🙄

reply

She is a film actress, which typically pays more than being a TV actress.
