A little over the top but entertaining

So I don't know much about Jack Reacher except for the 2 Tom Cruise movies which were amazing. However, in that movie, it was a lot more believable where Cruise operates more silently without leaving tons of dead bodies or whacking or hitting people like here.
Cruise is smarter and smaller and operated a lot more intelligently imo.

While the guy is a good actor for this sort of role, it was a bit silly in how he kills people anywhere with no consequences at all including murder and stuffing people in a car, punching people in a jail to hitting someone who has a dog including being aided by cops. Then letting a woman die in the train tunnel despite cameras and witnesses and cops being there.

And everything is just ignored and brushed off.

The girl is cute and has great chemistry with Reacher but is swooning over him lustily nonstop and eventually bares all to shower with him and get banged stupid while on cop duty. Seriously?

While the show is cartoony it is still fun entertainment if you ignore all these silly things. Feels like someone wanted a super hero vigilante type with no consequences at all and it delivers if you take it that way. However it is over the top instead of being believable like the Cruise movies were.

Still, enjoyed S1 thus far (I'm on Ep 5) and will continue

Just finished S1 and while the action is good and the actor is terrific I feel the story and plot are just childish. The Cruise movies were spectacular by comparison and I kept thinking back to how Cruise one felt more stealthy and more purposeful and refined than this one which was honestly cartoony.

So by the end of the S1 - Reacher kills a bunch of cops, Venezuelans, town civilian bad kids, shoots a Federal agent who somehow manages to get from possibly 100+ miles away after being shot in the lung area to the factory in an hour or so, sets fire to a factory which now has dozen+ bodies, kills several others in the house of that banker and leaves their dead bodies etc. etc. etc. AND! drives a pickup through the front doors of a police station and kills a cop there.

I mean, WTF. No one in their right mind would ever let Reacher walk free after all this. No one. The entire US Govt would hunt and find him easily and give him max jail time.

It was absolutely mind boggling honestly.

Acting wise, the lead is good. His deadpan delivery worked well and his analysis felt Sherlock Holmes'ey and I wanted more of that cerebral thing. It's a bit odd to see him be cerebral but I liked that aspect. Deductive logic and reasoning coupled with stealthy take out of key targets to make it look like a Hitman accident would have worked superbly. No need to go all guns blazing unless needed.

Also the Venezuelans were ruthless but folded so cheaply. Did not even put up any fight.

The side kick Neagley chick did a great job and kicked ass with her shooting skills and support. Roscoe was good and I still can't get her shower scene out of my head for how jarringly it just popped up. It felt like Alexandra Daddario's shocking bursting out in that show with Woody Harrelson iirc. Seared into the mind for the sudden way it appears shocking you. Not that I'm complaining since I highly enjoyed those scenes ;) ahem... anyways, to continue, Finlay was a bit cartoony and over the top.

..there seems to be a small limit now for comments.

I think Finlay was a comic relief.
Overall the show is just popcorn cheese fun. Switch off your brain type.

I'd rate Reacher 6.5/10 for S1

And I'm off to start S2.

There were two Cruise movies?

reply

Yes. Jack Reacher (2012) and Jack Reacher: Never Go Back (2016) and I liked both.

The first one was a lot better than the 2nd but the 2nd had some good action scenes especially the very satisfying bar scene fight

S2 is just as silly honestly and over the top. Reacher is basically untouchable and cannot do anything wrong. Hell, he goes to FBI and gets info from them because he's the brother of a slain FBI agent from a year or more ago and the FBI gives him all the info because...?

And to top it off, he tells the FBI who wants to arrest them, "...unless I kill them all" and the FBI agent says "just like his brother". WTF.... a guy walks into FBI office and says "I'm going to kill people" and FBI is like "oh, haha, just another Tuesday and ok, fine"

Jeez. Reacher has become a joke, a cartoon. He doesn't deduce anything properly and is going around killing folks left and right and even NYPD and FBI and whoever doesn't care at all. I mean, what? The NYPD cop keeps fighting with this guy but keeps giving him all info, lets him do whatever. Senator is involved in stuff and doesn't care. And the truck exchange in S2E5 was just laughable. These 2 women drive up to 4-5 guys who have a truck in the middle of the road.

The guys have just killed the other SINGLE trucker delivering 650 weapons worth $65million with ZERO security (lol) in the middle of the road. The 4 guys unload on the 2 women who are in the front seat using assault weapons. But they're not killed because the 2 women have moved to the back seat, dropped the seat and slid into the trunk. lol, wtf? And they pop out of the trunk and easily kill the 3 attackers. Meanwhile, ONE guy takes the truck with the 650 missiles and drives off and absolutely NO one can catch him? including cops who've been notified.

Then there's a shootout at a funeral but 2 hidden snipers cannot initially take out even 1 guy from the back who are steady and not moving. Lol. what? And then one gets taken out and other is blown up and cop allows.

Who wrote this garbage? Some 11 yr old kid?

I'm going to finish Reacher S2 but this has become such a stupid show. It's worse than most over the top shows honestly now and just a comedy at this point.

I decided to quit wasting my time with episode four.

When Citadel is better than Reacher, you know this show is done

I am halfway through S2 and totally agree , "cartoonish" is a good adjective , along with childish as i think you also mentioned .
After killing 3 guys on the construction site (s2e3ish) i was yelling at the screen "why do you never ever let anyone live long enough to question them about the situation that you are completely in the dark about ??"

Funny enough Reacher actually acknowleged after that scene that maybe he could have done that.

Still , he doesent need real intel , because he can just "think real hard" about a problem and pull some shit out of his ass that would make even Sherlock Holmes say "Thats a stretch" .
This was impressively put to use when they guessed that password in 3 tries with a time limit of 2 minutes.

S2E6 was frankly a lot of rubbish and cliche. Reacher is supposed to be smart and uses his brains and logic and also can fight if needed. He's not a Hulk nor Sherlock Holmes. Tom Cruise was PERFECT as Reacher imo. Smart, quick and took people out as needed without wanton killing.

This dude also is belligerent needlessly especially with cops and that one NYPD cop who is ok with all the silly comments.

It's ballooned into a switch off your brain completely and go with the show and don't question anything at this point.

e.g. there's the cop bringing the wife and kid from somewhere to Manhattan or wherever and covering a large distance as a car behind fires multiple rounds from automatics as there are zero cars nearby and no one and the other car folks catch up to them.

I mean, wtf. Have they ever been to NYC? That's absolutely not how it is. Not even in I Am Legend it was like that... lol. So you get it.

They made it too cartoony and silly honestly. I wish they'd have kept him more realistic and logical and believable instead of cartoony. I mean, I still can't get over him killing like 30+ people in S1 including ramming a cop with an SUV in the police station and killing him by pinning him against a jail cell (with borderline on whether he was guilty or not). There's ZERO chance Reacher walks after that. He'd in Supermax.
