I agree, it was a ridiculous story. If the bribe didn't work, they would have surveilled Marla for a few days then grabbed both her and the gf. Let Marla go and tell her the gf gets released once the mother is out from her guardianship and the diamonds are returned. Probably kill both of them afterward.
