US poised to ease restrictions on marijuana in historic shift, but it'll remain controlled substance

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration will move to reclassify marijuana as a less dangerous drug, The Associated Press has learned, a historic shift to generations of American drug policy that could have wide ripple effects across the country.

The proposal, which still must be reviewed by the White House Office of Management and Budget, would recognize the medical uses of cannabis and acknowledge it has less potential for abuse than some of the nation’s most dangerous drugs. However, it would not legalize marijuana outright for recreational use.

The agency's move, confirmed to the AP on Tuesday by five people familiar with the matter who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the sensitive regulatory review, clears the last significant regulatory hurdle before the agency’s biggest policy change in more than 50 years can take effect.

Once OMB signs off, the DEA will take public comment on the plan to move marijuana from its current classification as a Schedule I drug, alongside heroin and LSD. It moves pot to Schedule III, alongside ketamine and some anabolic steroids, following a recommendation from the federal Health and Human Services Department. After the public comment period and a review by an administrative judge, the agency would eventually publish the final rule.

“Today, the Attorney General circulated a proposal to reclassify marijuana from Schedule I to Schedule III," Justice Department director of public affairs Xochitl Hinojosa said in a statement. "Once published by the Federal Register, it will initiate a formal rulemaking process as prescribed by Congress in the Controlled Substances Act.”

Attorney General Merrick Garland's signature throws the full weight of the Justice Department behind the move and appears to signal its importance to the Biden administration.

Well... It's a start.

Vote farm for the 18-29 crowd. They will never fully legalize it due to that.

Biden wants the pot head votes. Idiots voting for an idiot... well, that would also include ALL Biden voters.

There were 55 million people who voted for him in 2020 and yes, they were all idiots.

Weed has been legal here in New York State for a few years now and I'm struggling to think of any benefit from the change. I say this as a guy who smoked more than his fair share of cheeb back in the day, but this has not been a good thing. You can smell the damn stuff everywhere (kids get exposed very young) and what they're selling - almost all of the legal dispensaries are located on the nearest reservation - is highly potent stuff that knocks people on their asses. Having your populace drugged up is not a recipe for an effective society. The Chinese are still pissed off about the opium trade that turned their population into passive zombies a couple centuries ago.

weed these days is a 100 times more powerful than it was 30 years ago. it would be like drinking Everclear. back in my day I smoked mexican brick weed. you would spend an hour separating the seeds and stems. it would get you high but you were still in control. I smoked all the time and while driving and never had accident. ever once in a while someone would get skunk weed and it would turn me into a zombie. you would literally be worthless for hours. you would lose a day and even remember what happened.

NO IT ISN'T.🤣

another option in those days was Mexican brick weed of varying quality. The typical price for any of the above was around $100.00 an OZ or $900.00 a lb.

OK

thats how things were back in the day...

That comports with my experiences. Back in the late 80's/early 90's your standard issue ditch weed, which required the removal of stems and seeds, was good for a buzz but didn't render you numb. It was generally priced about $20 per 1/8 oz. or $35 per 1/4 oz. But if you got some good skunk it could run all the way up to $80 a 1/4 oz. and would knock your dick in the dirt with just a couple hits. Very rarely did I buy a full ounce, a.k.a a "Z", of any caliber.

However, in 2002 I was traveling in southwest China, Yunnan province, and I bought an ounce for the equivalent of 10 bucks. Nearly half of it was stems, but even after picking them out it was still a heck of a deal. Nonetheless, you could smoke this stuff all day and manage yourself quite well. That was a world apart from the stuff they're selling in the dispensaries these days. It's like comparing Boone's Farm to rye whiskey. And the edibles are even crazier. Most people just melt into a couch after ingesting them.

Thanks a lot for the pot!

I have no problem with it being legal as long as DUI laws apply.

I enjoy a toke on occasion with some wine.
