First Cumulative Patch Tuesday

Today is the first Cumulative Patch Tuesday. Woody Leonhard posted several worthwhile blog entries dated 10/11/2016 on his site.

To summarize his posts, don't be in a hurry to install anything. That said, from what I've read today's Oct 2016 “Security Monthly Quality Rollup” should include October security updates and the September non-security updates. So it should be relatively safe, but Woody says:

But wait for the cannon fodder to install it, for Microsoft to answer (or dodge) reports of bugs, and watch here for a switch to MS-DEFCON 3 or lower.

Considering this is a brand new process, I think it's advisable to wait a bit before installing.

I haven't installed any of the October updates, yet; I have 4 in total that are all marked important. For now, I think it's still a good idea to sit tight and see what - if any - issues come of this new cumulative update model that MS have deigned to roll out on long-suffering Windows 7 users.

I have 3 important updates selected:
Security and Quality Rollup for the .NET Framework 3.5.1 - https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3188740
October 2016 security monthly quality rollup - https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3185330
Malicious Software Removal Tool - https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/890830

I haven't installed any of the above patches yet.

But I did install this month's updates for Adobe Flash Player, Adobe Reader and Microsoft Office.

I have those 3 updates, as well as KB3193713 - MS16-120: Description of the security upodate for Silverlight: October 11, 2016:

That makes sense. I don't have Silverlight installed on my computer.

I installed these 3 important updates today:
Security and Quality Rollup for the .NET Framework 3.5.1 - https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3188740
October 2016 security monthly quality rollup - https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3185330
Malicious Software Removal Tool - https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/890830

After the reboot, I was immediately offered:
Servicing stack update for Windows 7 SP1 - https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3177467

I installed that, and I didn't have to reboot afterwards.

There are no apparent problems. I read some reports of computers with Realtek audio drivers losing sound after installing the October rollups. But I have a Realtek audio driver and my sound still works fine.

I have installed the 3 updates which you already did, plus the additional Silverlight update which I was offered. I've experienced absolutely no problems upon restarting, although I am now being offered KB3192403 - October 2016 Preview of Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3192403

I have not installed it, however. It apparently fixes some issues that were present in KB3185330, and serves as a 'preview' of the upcoming November Monthly Rollup.

I haven't been offered that one yet. It'll probably show up tomorrow, but I'm not going to install the preview version.

Woody Leonard had this to say about it:

Win 7, 8.1 “C” Tuesday patch rollup previews are out – KB 3192403, 3192404

As expected, the new “previews” of next month’s patch rollups are out...

... they’re test copies of some of the new non-security patches we expect to see in the next Monthly Rollup.

Please, don’t install these unless you want to try to break them.

I agree with Woody and yourself; I won't be installing the 'preview' patch. I'll wait for the official release next month.
