First Cumulative Patch Tuesday

Today is the first Cumulative Patch Tuesday. Woody Leonhard posted several worthwhile blog entries dated 10/11/2016 on his site.

To summarize his posts, don't be in a hurry to install anything. That said, from what I've read today's Oct 2016 “Security Monthly Quality Rollup” should include October security updates and the September non-security updates. So it should be relatively safe, but Woody says:

But wait for the cannon fodder to install it, for Microsoft to answer (or dodge) reports of bugs, and watch here for a switch to MS-DEFCON 3 or lower.

Considering this is a brand new process, I think it's advisable to wait a bit before installing.

I agree with Woody and yourself; I won't be installing the 'preview' patch. I'll wait for the official release next month. - Coldheart2236

Next month is when the sh!t hits the fan. The non-security patches being previewed today are full of telemetry "services".

This article describes the DiagTrack service and includes the commands to kill it dead:

http://www.infoworld.com/article/3132377/microsoft-windows/microsoft-previews-telemetry-push-with-new-win781-patches-kb-3192403-3192404.html

Alternately, we could do this to disable the DiagTrack service:

So, we have to decide if we want to: 1.) give up on Windows Update and install security-only updates manually, 2.) install the full roll-ups and try to disable telemetry, or 3.) allow Microsoft to spy on us.

I'm currently leaning toward number #2, because it looks like Microsoft is now fixing bugs in security patches with later non-security patches: https://www.askwoody.com/2016/is-microsoft-now-fixing-security-patch-bugs-with-non-security-patches/
