UPDATE: Trending Section

There's a new "Trending" section at the top of the home page. This will list the movies, tv shows and actors that have the most recent activity. This should help people see what others are talking about and generate more activity in the individual boards.

Also, if you haven't already seen it, I added edit/delete functionality earlier today.

Notifications are on the way :)

This site looks better every time I drop in to browse; excellent progress !

Thanks.

Great work Jim!

Look forward to notifications too. A request: Could you also add a quote functionality and possibility of making workable links in the posts?

reply

You should be able to create links like this:

Google

Google HTML anchor tags for a tutorial.

Test: blabla

Test 2: Yahoo.com

shit...I didn't do it right, haha! I haven't had to do that in so long, a lost skill, woes me!

<< I haven't had to do that in so long, a lost skill, woes me! >>

I put the format in a word doc I keep open while here, then copy a new target address from web and carefully paste it in, replacing that section. Then I copy and paste that from the Word doc into the post here. At least it's not a lot of typing. (There must be faster ways, too)

For instance, what I keep in the open Word doc is:

a href="http://www.moviechat.org/movies/tt0159886">Survivors Haiku Thread (grief counseling)

.........,.but with < at the beginning and > at the end.

And you can make the different sections different colors there, to guide you toward what you're replacing. The colors don't matter when you copy and paste the whole thing over here.

@DreamersxDisease

I don't mean to sound condescending...but maybe someone else will find that useful : )

reply

You're fine, but you're also right, there must be faster ways. I think that's why everyone would just prefer there be a button for it like there was on IMDb. It's just more efficient, practical, and user friendly.

I think I almost had it and just added a space or something where it shouldn't have been. Oh well, I don't know if I'll have a link that urgent that I'd need to post anyways haha...thank you so much for the rundown though!

wha???

reply

Ok, it works. Guess I will have to google every time I have to do it for a while but no pain no gain :)

Thanks again Jim

reply

Thank you so much Jim, it's looking fantastic! 😄👍👍

reply

I saw lots of people asking for something like this and saying without it we wouldn't attract new posters...looks like you were reading their minds! Nice!

I continue to be thankful for all you're doing Lord Jim of the Message Boards ;)

reply

That Trending part up top is actually clever. Gets people interested in seeing what is being said.

Thanks Jim for that and the other updates!

reply

I agree. Do the arrows around the trending box to scroll across and vertically work? Or is it there just to look pretty?

reply

Yeah, I agree. I saw people asking for something like that and kind of shrugged my shoulders. Like, "neat idea, but do we really need it?" But, selfishly, after posting to the boards I like and seeing that pop up on the trending bar, it definitely warmed me to it. That way people can see things are active, may get reminded of a board, and be pushed to actually post. It's a good little self-sustaining feature.

reply

It's exactly what I asked for! Yay! I do kind of wish it would show more than 7 discussions. I'm very willing to participate in as many as possible.

reply

It does, just a little over that. The arrows seem to be working now so that helps to see a bit more!

reply

Yes, I just noticed. Woohoo!

reply

Little and gradual improvements like that is such a big tease ¬¬

reply

Seems like there was another update! Just as you were asking, I see the other change now. There's a scrolling bar to see more than 7 entries now. Cool! (if you ask me, I think it looks better than the TMDb "Let's Chat" one...don't tell them I said that!)

I don't even watch many of the shows listed, but it has got me curious what was said. I also like the mix of old and new movies and TV shows up there. We're not all talking Stars Wars and comic book movies all the time. There's a Angela Lansbury and Psycho. We got a Lansbury, folks!

reply

When ya got Lansbury, you know you're onto something ;)
Yes, I think this could do wonders for activity, hopefully. Not Lansbury, the trends...but also not NOT Lansbury, lol

lol

Plus she's going to be in the Mary Poppins sequel w/ Emily Blunt. I could see her dominating the Trending panel for a while, possibly more than Star Wars The Last Jedi.

reply

Psssh...come on, she is the REAL Last Jedi and we all know it. She'd end that story in a minute and then where would Lucas be?!

reply

😄 ^^

(thx to whoever linked to Emojicopy.com, btw)

omg....I have to tell you, a few weeks ago on Netflix under PROGRAMS YOU MIGHT LIKE, they gave me "Murder, She Wrote". I was like, "What the HELL?!?"

I suddenly felt so, SO olde!!!!

I think it came up because I'd watched other old shows with strong female leads, but that...THAT was pushing it TOO FAR!

This has to be like our new motto or inside joke or something. Anytime anything gets too be too much in a positive or negative way, "we got Lansbury, folks!"

- "Edit and delete is up!"
- "We got Lansbury, folks!"
hahaha...the possibilities and fun are endless :P

I love it!

And this reminds me, I have to finally get around to seeing THE PICTURE OF DORIAN GRAY, which I think was some kind of teen breakthrough for her. I've seen her in GASLIGHT (1944) and she's great, but I never got around to seeing her in that other praised performance from her earliest years.

reply

You are a good man Jim, thank you for such a great site. I love the feel of it here.

reply

Trending section moves way faster than I thought it would. Seems we are an active group of survivors after all. 👍

Frankly, I give this thread of mine SOME credit for that: Survivors Haiku Thread (grief counseling)
