I didn't like it when it first came out, but in the last few years I've really grown to appreciate One Magic Christmas.

Not very many of these can hold a candle to "It's A Wonderful Life." It's the "Shawshank" of its day -- a crowd pleaser as big, corny, and obvious as its reputation would have you believe. And while the aforementioned drawbacks, as well as Clarence and its religious overtones, can be annoying as hell, the poignant, gritty story of George Bailey, a decent man who finds himself in Fate's crosshairs, packs an existential punch that transcends its hoary holiday roots.

reply

That's why I like One Magic Christmas. It's a little darker.

reply

I need to watch that one again. Mary Steenburgen and Harry Dean Stanton rarely disappoint.

"It's a Wonderful Life" is my sister's all time favorite. Actually it was not originally a Christmas movie. It wasn't even a big box office success. It gained popularity when it was shown many years later on TV.

A long time ago I saw the Marlo Thomas remake called , "It Happened One Christmas." In it she plays the Jimmy Stewart role, only she is Mary Bailey who marries George Hatch. I really enjoyed it, but it hasn't been aired in years.

reply

The scenes of Bailey seeing the world without him are some of the most exceptional horror filmmaking I've ever encountered.

The Matrix. I'm aware it has nothing to do with Christmas but the first two times I saw it were during Christmas.

But for actual Christmas ones, The Shop Around the Corner, and 2008's A Christmas Tale with Catherine Deneuve.

I just thought of something else that I never miss during this time of the year.
Tales From the Crypt, 1972.
I absolutely love the segment with Joan Collins! Great fun! Santa Clause really was watching her and she was downright naughty!
