Most surprising thing in film?

It can be about a single movie, a director, actor, something in the plot, whatever...

reply

The fact that Tyler Perry not only continues to make movies, but people continue to watch them.

reply

I soooooo agree... I couldn't even take 5 minutes of that shit.

reply

And those Madea movies are actually quite popular in China. Like, who would have guessed it??

reply

I quite like him as a (straight, so to speak) actor in stuff like Gone Girl and Vice, which I guess counts as a surprise.

reply

Yeah, he's actually fine as an actor in the films he doesn't direct. Nothing award-winning, but passable.

reply

This is a generality. The most surprising thing to me is that so many people, each with their own thoughts, ideas, and personalities, can somehow all come together and complete a film. It's something of a miracle this happens as often as it does.

i think this is a good thought!

i have no special knowledge of the film industry & how movies get made, but what i have heard has all suggested that getting any movie made, even a bad one, even a small budget indie, is a huge undertaking.

i always try to keep that in mind whenever i watch a movie, or anything. somebody went to a lot of trouble to make it, and presumably they wouldn't have done all that work if it didn't mean something to them. if i don't dig it, then that's my preference, but the fact that it was made to completion & exists is alone something i couldn't do, & that deserves a bit of respect.

I'm not certain if this fits the bill but I've been slowly rewatching the Planet Earth series recently
Hundreds of cameras, various continents, lenses that could film a mile away, aerial and underwater shots, five years in the making!
It is stunning, I can hardly believe they did it, so it is a nice treat to watch it all again

I just finished watching this: https://www.realityblurred.com/realitytv/2019/04/expedition-unknown-egypt-live-interview/ Granted, it was no longer a live event but nevertheless fascinating to watch.

Thanks as always db!

Seeing a film that is considered total crap in the US, and yet people in other countries love it. I never understood that at all.

I mean, one example I can remember was when "Blades of Glory" came out. It looked like a really stupid movie with Owen Wilson make an ass of himself while ice-skating, so I avoided it. But then, I hear my Korean exchange student friends went to see it and loved it!
