John Philip Sousa Birthday Celebration - Nov. 6, 2021

reply

does the military do this for general patton?

reply

When I was in the marines we celebrated the Marine Corps birthday on November 11. I don't recall celebrating the birthdays of individual marines, but it may happen here and there on an ad hoc basis. The Sousa thing is probably local to D.C. where he is buried (and where the video is from). I don't know how long they have been doing it.

reply

so they do this every year?

reply

Sousa's birthday, I don't know.

The Marine Corps Birthday is one of the highlights, if not THE highlight, of the Marines social calendar. Fancy balls and such. I never attended one. But the chow hall goes all out with a special meal. Yummy stuff, the cooks outdo themselves. That I definitely sampled. It's pretty much the equivalent of the Thanksgiving or Christmas meal.

reply

I want you to remember, no one won a war by celebrating his birthday. He won it by surprising the other dumb bastards while they were celebrating their birthdays.

Is the show worth watching?

Music shows sure have changed since then!

reply

I'm not a folk music fan, but this one gets me quite emotional.

reply

Good songs certainly do that to us

It's simply striking to watch classic music performances as opposed to some of the overproduced/lip synched/game show level performances of today

reply

I like it also, as it's really nostalgic. I especially like the lyrics, "it's the hammer of justice..."

I encountered your post immediately upon the heels of watching this classic again,
