Do you ever watch a movie and pause it to ...

Go to its board and read non-spoiler threads about it, and to take a break?

I used to do this a lot. Last night I was watching a movie I was very much enjoying. Isle of Dogs, anyone here seen it?

I paused it for a break, thought about coming here to its board, then realized that on virtually every board I go to there are unfailingly a multitude of extremely critical posts. Usually petty criticisms.

So instead I got a snack, played with my dog, then went back to watching it.

Loved the movie!

Never. I don't even like looking at ratings for a few reasons. I've had spoilers pop up, but I also don't want my perception altered because of certain expectations.

If I ever take a break, it might be to look up something historical, a reference, but its rare. Usually when I pause, its so I can imagine without losing the movie.

reply

I do that sometimes if I'm watching a historical film.

reply

Rarely, but not for a break. I usually do it for a bad movie to see what other people have said about it. When I watch a movie, my phone is away and I sit there until it's done (unless nature calls).

reply

I use to do that a lot but once or twice I had something spoiled just by a thread title and now I do my best to avoid a board until after seeing a movie. I also avoid try to looking at IMDB for a show I'm binging because it will say how many episodes an actor is in and that can give away when their character will die...I think I'm becoming paranoid in my 40s lol

reply

I blame that on GoT 😁

reply

100% lol

reply

I've never seen it, but even I heard about it!

reply

Absolutely...the spoiler trolls were the pondscum of IMDB

reply

Trolls of all sorts abounded on that board.

i'm reading ted chiang's 'stories of your life and others,' his 2002 collection that includes the short story the film 'arrival' was based on.

so far the book is great, btw. can't recommend it highly enough. he's a truly talented writer.

anyway, i thought i'd take a peak at the arrival board here to see if anyone else had read the story & perhaps started a thread about it, shared some thoughts on how it compared to the book, etc etc.

and of course, what i saw instead was quite a few threads calling it boring & stupid. and, to be fair, some threads praising it (not too many) and more just questioning plot-points & so on.

don't have a broader point, other than to say that ted chiang is great, i'm really enjoying his book & i'm looking forward to reading his new collection as well. just had to think of this thread when i went to the board this morning.

There's nothing quite like discovering a great book. Enjoy it while it lasts!

Yeah the boring & stupid threads. It's a buzzkill when you've just watched something you've enjoyed, want to chat with someone about it, and you see a bunch of those threads. Hard to focus on the threads praising when the majority are hammering it into the ground for trivial reasons. I like the threads about plot points.

If I'm not digging the movie, I'll sometimes go check out its board while its playing.

reply

That too :)

reply

Yeah I do quite often to check something about it.

I also sometimes just need a break from watching in general so will pause or stop it and do something else for a little then come back to it.

reply

It's one of the advantages of watching at home, vs in a theatre.

reply

Haven't been in a cinema since 2009 and that was the first time since 1992! I do like my freedom and not having to worry about the possibility of annoying people. Also helps that I prefer older/classic films so there isn't much the cinemas have for me anyway.

reply

It is a luxury to be able to get up and sit back down whenever you feel like it, without having to disturb others, or squeeze past someone's knees. You can even speak the dialogue along with the actors if you want to, and not bother anyone.

I haven't seen a movie in a theatre in a long time. There is something to be said for it. The big screen, darkened big room devoted to nothing other than viewing a film, and the experience of being part of an audience.

There were a few good revival theatres where I lived for a long time. It was fun to experience some of the classics the way they were originally meant to be seen. No revival theatres here though.

I have a habit of looking people in the film up on IMDB, while watching the film. I look up what else the actors have done, or trivia about the movie. Sometimes its more interesting than the movie itself.

reply

If you get Amazon Prime, you can look all of that up and it automatically pauses the movie. It's one of the reasons I love Prime and ditched Netflix. Reading the trivia can be a lot of fun!

reply

All the time, especially if it is very suspenseful. I read spoilers. I did that recently with Hotel Mumbai. Honestly could not watch the scenes with the baby ... anyway no spoilers.

reply

I had to look that one up. I see why you paused it. I can imagine well enough what the baby scene is like to know I don't want to see it.

Another person who doesn't mind being spoiled! We're few and far between.
