What did you watch on this cold ass week? (10/11-16/11)

I barely had time to rake the leaves and the place is covered in white shit! Oh well, like I said last week, just a reason to watch more movies!

My week:

Lights out (2016 TV): I didn’t like it. It’s not particularly bad or anything but I found it to be mediocrely forgettable and filled with cheap jump scares. The more horror movies I watch lately the more I realise how The Conjuring 2 was great. My rating: 4.5/10

Don’t be afraid of the dark (2010 TV): I liked this one. I thought the little creatures were pretty cool. This horror flick does not break the mold but props for keeping my interest all the way till the final. My rating: 6.5/10

Fort bliss (2014 TV): “After returning home from an extended tour in Afghanistan, a decorated U.S. Army medic and single mother struggles to rebuild her relationship with her young son.” I think Michelle Monaghan is a wonderful and beautiful actress and this movie was a great vehicle for her. And by vehicle I mean a tank. Both me and my wife enjoyed it and it was touching without being cheesy. My only complaint: I hate Ron Livingston’s face. Urgh! My rating: 6.5-7/10

Suspect Zero (2004 TV): This movie was decent enough for me. I don’t know what’s up with the metascore of 37 and the tomatometer of 18%. The imdb rating of 5.8 is closer to the truth if you ask me. I don’t know what’s up with the horror genre listed but trust me it’s a crime-mystery, and a decent one at that. It was not without reminding me a solid X-files episode too. Eckhart, Kingsley and Moss all did a fine job and the story was decent, did I mention that? My rating: a decent 6/10

Independence Day: resurgence (2016 TV): I think that if you go in with the right expectations, you can enjoy this movie on some levels, one of the being the comedic aspect of it. I quickly noticed the hint of humour in the whole thing and it was a relief. Otherwise this would have been a complet failure. The way the humans acted and talked was unsettlingly bad a times and the story was not groundbreaking but the visuals were impressive and the action was entertaining. My favourite scene was the old man in the boat. 2 hours length was a bit too much so: 5/10

I started Insurgent (2015) but after 50 minutes I did not care for a single character and I realized it was not even the first movie of the franchise so I stopped it and deleted it.

reply

Baby, it's cold outside!

My ratings of what I watched:
Lady and the Tramp (2019) 7/10
Noelle (2019) 7/10
Rocky Mountain Christmas (2017) 7/10

reply

Ok ok, yeah, maybe if I do the thread we’ll be able to match a few because I haven’t seen any of yours this week

Colors (1988) - An experienced cop and his rookie partner patrol the streets of East Los Angeles while trying to keep the gang violence under control. Duvall had no presence in this movie which wasn't good. A run of the mill LA cop movie. 6.5/10

Ride in the Whirlwind (1966) - Three cowboys, mistaken for members of an outlaw gang, are relentlessly pursued by a posse. Produced and written by Jack. A good vigilante western. Cameron Mitchell is solid as ever. 7/10

The Iceman (2012) - The story of Richard Kuklinski, the notorious contract killer and family man. When finally arrested in 1986, neither his wife nor daughters had any clue about his real profession. A fine performance by Shannon. This movie skipped over too much of his life. This need Scorsese and about another hour. 6.5/10

Midnight Express (1978) - Billy Hayes (Brad Davis), an American college student, is caught smuggling drugs out of Turkey and thrown into prison. Always good for a rewatch. Fine performance from John Hurt. The movie is not historically accurate but one of the better prison moves. 7.5/10

Mean Streets (1973) - A small-time hood aspires to work his way up the ranks of a local mob. Finally saw it. I wan't as impressed as most. It looked like a practice run for Raging Bull. I found it a bit disjointed with scenes that made no sense. With that said it is still a 7/10

The Kill Team (2019) - A young American soldier in Afghanistan is disturbed by his commanding officer's behavior and is faced with a moral dilemma. A short war crime movie set in Afghanistan which is based on true events. There are better movies that cover the topic. I didn't car for any of the characters. 6/10

Polar (2019) - A retiring assassin suddenly finds himself on the receiving end of a hit, contracted by none other than his own employer seeking to cash in on the pensions of aging employees. This was way too flashy for an assassin movie. I like my assassin movie to be gritty. Mads was great with his character of few words. The other assassins seemed more interested in style than substance. 6/10

i thought lights out was fine. i agree it is heavy on the jumps, but some of them gave me a pretty good jolt, & i think it did a pretty decent job of drawing sympathetic characters too.

don't know any of your other films.

my week:

klute (1971) 3 call girl gets enmeshed into a missing person investigation. first half great, second half meandering & not so good.

the first half seemed to be working towards the greatest movie about a hooker movie ever made, but then it trails off to a meandering, uncertain crime/mystery story that got progressively less & less interesting, at least to me.

promised much, delivered less.

doctor sleep (2019) 2 fairly massive disappointment. i've liked everything flanagan's done so much, but i really saw none of what attracted to me in the past here. it's terribly clunky, filled with trite lines & odd pacing & absolutely no atmosphere or tension. that said, it's received reasonably good reviews, & i like flanagan's other films so much that i'm willing to believe i might have missed something here, so i might try to catch it again before it leaves theatres.

soni (2018) 3.5 very tidy, minor key look at the frustrations of female police officers in delhi. light on major conflicts, heavier on personal drama. quite good!

safeword (2015) 1.5 i want there to be dirty, kinky, s&m themed films. i don't mind if they're cheap or amateurish. that can be a feather in their cap, even.

but jeez, can a little bit of rigor be applied to the plot & script? there is a twist here, but it's a twist that still leaves most of the elements of the film making not even the smallest amount of sense.

i could forgive that if it was at least a little bit steamy, but they can't even give me that. the actresses are attractive in my books, & we get a bit of nudity, but sadly this is completely bereft of anything that came close to getting my motor running.

theory of obscurity: a film about the residents (2015) 3 . very straightforward doc on a less than straightforward camera shy cult band,

it's perfectly fine, though after 90 minutes i felt like i still knew very little about them, why they did what they did, etc.

dangerous worry dolls (2008) 3 utterly ridiculous. it's hard not to be disappointed by a women in prison film that contains no sex & almost no nudity (& the nudity you get is not what you might expect), but this was weird & silly & it provided me with solid entertainment. fun!

the wandering earth (2019) 3 mankind works together to move the planet out of the solar system when the sun goes haywire. this is definitely one of the most adolescent films i've seen recently. not a terrible thing, really. it's the kind of idea a 14 year old would cook up in his creative writing class. it's silly & goofy & melodramatic, & i had a pretty good time watching it.

it's just a good bit too long & a bit too full of bombastic music that wore out its welcome.

but i say don't judge it too harshly. it's silly harmless fun, & if you don't take yourself too seriously you'll probably mostly enjoy it.

landing lake (2019) 2.5 techs on an out of town call run into paranormal forces (i think?)... absolutely terrible in some ways, but i kinda admire its audacious shoot for the moon spirit. it's only about 1/4 of the way there as far as execution goes, but it's still worth a watch for fans of mind-bending fare like the endless or coherence - just don't expect it to be anywhere as good as that.

it's also far too long. they had 80 minutes of material, really

layer cake (2004) 2 i avoid crime/gangster films. everything about them makes my 'i'm bored' neurons trigger. but i gave this a try tonight after hearing generally positive things from a few sources.

didn't like it. the first 20 or minutes chugged along with a nice, bristly energy, but after that it just was a turgid jumble of this guy connected to this bad guy & another guy threatening someone else & i just couldn't make myself care enough to try to follow along with its needlessly complicated plot.

long day's journey into night (2019) 4.5 when are they going to put trigger warnings on films where characters have runny noses and make no effort to clean themselves up? why do film-makers film this?

there is a very long shot around the 1hr4minute mark of a guy eating an apple while his nose runs. it goes on forever, and it is completely disgusting. why???

ok, with that out of my system, i am actually happy to say it turns out i absolutely loved this! leave the running nose & the needlessly long running time aside. the last hour of this is just dizzyingly great. i could almost imagine it sliding into that last season of twin peaks with a little tweaking.

i wish the opening 70 minutes were just a little tighter, perhaps - a bit too much preamble. and i can't forgive that business with the apple & the nose. that was too much for me to take.

but even with its flaws, this is definitely one of my favourite movies of the year. if you have any kind of fondness for films that go all in on dreamlike, ephemeral atmosphere & completely sacrifice narrative, you might dig it as well.

bride of re-animator (1991) 3.5 i'm not going to push back against all the people who are saying it's not as good as the first one. it's a step below it for sure. it's oddly talky at times & lacking the go for broke crude sensibility of the first.

but it still has fun gore & a good sense of humor. you'll find things to enjoy here.

army of shadows (1969) 4 resistance group plots against nazis in wartime france. there were elements i thought were great. in particular, an early scene where a betrayer in their midst has to be dealt with is one of the best of its kind i think i've seen. there were several moments like that, where i felt i was seeing some of the most realistic, true depictions of what it might have been like to be someone in that time & place.

but parts of it really confused me, and i found it just a bit too long. i wish people wouldn't make such long movies.

the midnight swim (2014) 3.5 trippy, weird story about three sisters (two of whom are very foxy, thank you very much) returning home after their mothers death & having odd, perhaps paranormal experiences. i really like this a lot. has a really cringe-inducing scene in the middle, but it's odd & spacey in a way that is handled very deftly. if you like slightly trippy head-scratchers, this is a great hidden gem i reckon.

too late (2015) 3.5 private investigator searches for a missing woman. about 2/3s fantastically enjoyable & full of surprises, 1/3 cringe inducing dialogue. & a scene where john hawkes sings a sensitive song about his feelings almost made me turn it off.

but it's not some cookie-cutter exercise. it's fun & i never knew where it was going, so in the main i give it a fairly big yay.

Man I haven't posted here in ages lol. Haven't watched many movies. But the other day I started watching The Man in the High Castle. Excellent series. I'm only at the beginning of season 2 right now but so far I give it at least 8/10.

Movies:

-Lola Rennt (1998)
Great movie. Saw a 35mm presentation in theater, which was really cool.

TV Shows:

-Relic Hunter - marathon

-The Bold and the Beautiful - marathon of very old episodes

-Twilight Zone (1959) - marathon
I'm at season 4 now and I'm not sure the episodes being one hour long works, to be honest.

-Murder She Wrote - marathon

■ Konosuba the Movie (2019). Extremely funny. It was more of a long episode, the animation being more or less like the TV series. But who cares? it's great comedy.

■ Rampant (2018). If you liked Kingdom, the south korean series about zombies in medieval times, you'll probably like this one. Kingdom is much better, though.

■ The Wrath (2018). Another south korean movie set in medieval times, this time about ghosts. Not bad, good productions values, a bit slow, though.

■ 3 Bodas de Más. Spanish romcom. Not great, but very enjoyable. The female lead is a cutie.

■ Urban Legend. Slasher from the 90s. Quite cliché, but decent. It's completely unknown, and I think it would deserve better.

The Bay (2019, BritBox, series 1) Morven Christie (Grantchester) plays a detective sergeant family liaison officer called in on an investigation into missing twins from a family living in Morecambe, England. Labeled as “Northern Broadchurch,” it has nowhere near the intensity and drama of that series. Interesting story, but uneven execution. 6.5/10

Mary Poppins Returns (2018) Mary Poppins (Emily Blunt) returns to help the now-grown Banks children through a tough time. The original movie is a tough act to follow. Valiant effort, but fell short in my estimation. Emily’s Mary seemed a bit grim with little joy. 6/10

Nobody’s Fool (1994) Paul Newman plays Sully, a cantankerous, small-town blue-collar worker, scrambling for odd jobs after a workplace injury wrecks one of his knees. His adult son, whom he abandoned as a child, has recently returned to town with his own son, and Sully struggles with admitting his mistakes. The cast also includes Jessica Tandy as Miss Beryl, Sully’s landlady, in her final film role. Their onscreen chemistry is the best part of this film. 6.5/10

Long Way Round (2004, TubiTV) This documentary series follows Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman on their 3-month motorbike trip around the world from London, through Europe and Asia, to Alaska and through the northern US, ending in New York City. I’ve seen this before, but it was quite a while ago and thought it was time to revisit it. My favorite part, which I though was the most dramatic, is the segment when they’re traveling through eastern Russia where roads are practically non-existent (how much that has changed in the last 15 years, I don’t know). 8/10

Long Way Down (2007, TubiTV) This time the two friends begin their trip at John O’Groats, at the northern tip of Scotland, and travel south through Europe, across northern Africa through Libya and Egypt, then head southward to the southern tip of South Africa and Capetown. Roads, or lack thereof, are again an issue, but the people they meet and the wildlife they observe are fascinating. 8/10

My ratings of what others watched (ones I've seen before):
Suspect Zero (2004) is on my watchlist so I'll be getting to it soon. Looks good, I'm betting it will rate a decent 6/10.
The Iceman (2012) 6/10 Man what a creepy guy, cold as ice. I've heard him mentioned in a few books.
Midnight Express (1978) Good film I need to watch again soon 7/10
Mean Streets (1973) Agreed, disjointed. 5/10
Nobody’s Fool (1994) I've been thinking about watching this; think I'll give it a try since Paul Newman and Jessica Tandy are both good actors.

My Ratings of what I watched this week:
MISTY (1961)
One of my wife's favorites, we've watched it several times. Nice, clean entertainment on a ranch in rural Virginia. 7/10

AUSTRALIA (2008)
This was my first time seeing this film. It seemed a bit overlong at times but not enough to keep me from watching it again. I would have left a fair amount of the antagonist's dialogue on the cutting room floor. I'm not a fan of Nicole Kidman but she did a better job than I expected. I liked the interaction between Hugh Jackman and the Aboriginal boy, it was quite believable. 6/10

CAT O' NINE TAILS (1971)
I haven't seen this in several decades so I was intrigued to watch it again, even in Italian with English subtitles. James Franciscus and Karl Malden both turned in good performances with a plot that kept me guessing. 7/10

CLASS (1983)
I haven't watched this since shortly after it came out but when I saw it was available for viewing I gave it another shot, remembering some funny scenes among the prep school guys and staff. It was worth seeing again; Rob Lowe was as funny as I remember him. An immature guilty pleasure. 7/10
