Why do some posters need to post for attention while others don't?

Psychologically, I know the reason for it; people have been shown to need a type of attention that psychologists call belonging. I mean Maslow put belonging in his fun little hierarchy of needs. How do we as a species benefit from benign postings meant to inflame, whilst garnering as many comments as possible?

I would say that intense competition to see how many times we can be on the first page in general discussion can benefit our self esteem. They do say that one way to seek attention is to do a lot of something. Those individuals are often extremely concerned with attention and social validation. They are likely to be less interested in the actual content itself, and more interested in having an audience and how the audience receives and responds to the information. Excessive attention-seeking is not a character flaw. It is a brain wiring response to early developmental trauma caused by neglect.

What do you say, is this just drama which causes the pituitary gland and hypothalamus to secrete endorphins? Perhaps those endorphins mimic opiates in the brain and become addictive?

reply

Let's really make this thread fun. Name some names.

reply

In real life I like to pout and look very visibly agitated hoping someone would notice me and when they ask what's wrong I very angrily reply "can't you see I just want to be left alone?!!"

reply

Everyone needs a hobby.

reply

Indeed

reply

Even if it is just being a Stygiannati stooge.

reply

No idea what that is

Edit to add but I assume it's some sort of insult directed at me...

reply

Me neither! What the hell is a Stygiannati? These $2.00 words (price increase) throw my little gray cells into a tail spin! 🙇🏼‍♀️

reply

It's a word Quasimodo invented to represent The Illuminatis because he doesn't like the word "Illuminati."

reply

You do realize you I’m going to have to do more research...don’t you? 💁🏼‍♀️

Illuminati? Tom Hanks or Nickolas Cage? Does this have anything to do with the Bible Code?

reply

Or...what if BOTH Tom Hanks and Nick Cage were involved?! End times people!

reply

Ahhh thanks. Not sure if he was calling me a stooge for the illuminati or if he was just making a general statement but either way can't say I'm losing sleep over it lol

reply

An excellent plan 👌

reply

Can't you see I just want to be left alone?!?😁

reply

Why are you replying to me?? 😬

reply

Touché my worthy adversary..,

reply

Every thread including this one right here, is phishing for replies. That's not necessarily a bad thing as the site would die without it, I'm just saying that even you are being an attention seeker. We all are. That's how the site works.

reply

I fully admit that there is hypocrisy here. I've said that this post is more about me and some of the anger I've been experiencing than it is about others.

reply

This site is way more positive than most sites. It's not perfect and there is always the ignore function.

reply

I don't like ignoring anyone. I do agree that this site is far more positive than some of the others that I checked out after IMDB shut down. There has just been a shift in tone here lately, and I guess I'm feeling it. This place has been like a second home while dealing with intense loneliness for the last little while, and maybe I'm just having a bit of a fit that it's a little more negative and mundane all at once.

reply

I think things have held up pretty well when you consider there is nothing going on in the entertainment world. I don't know what you mean by mundane. Posters have always posted about personal things on here. Some are interesting to me and some are not.

reply

There has been a steady increase in the number of sock accounts and trolling going on over the past few months. Lots of brainless posts and worse. It's the same problem that IMDb used to have.

reply

I’ve noticed this too, but thankfully they don’t seem to stick around for long.

reply

We all want responses to our topics! I do feel some of the topics are ridiculous, but a few weeks ago I posted one about Taco Bell not having queso, which would certainly fall under that category.

For me this is the last message board left I know where we can discuss the mundane as well as actual movie stuff with some anonymity.

And if I'm chatting with strangers I prefer other movie buffs.

Above all we are all movie buffs.

And as someone above mentioned a lot of the posts that come off as attention seeking is just boredom. I've vern off work since late March and I'm going crazy with boredom.

reply

I see were your going there. You are trying to get us to think: Moviebuff. 😳

reply

Haha I wasn't but I do kind of think he fits the description of op's thread.

I did use movie buffs twice though so...

reply

LMAO! 👍

reply

I guess it would be better if no one posted anything??

reply

I specifically said

That's not necessarily a bad thing as the site would die without it

I was only pointing out that we all seek attention and the OP has already responded with a reasonable reply.

reply

I was just using an absurd example. I wasn't attacking you.

reply

In that case, I apologize.

reply

Nah. Some people are genuinely interested in what others have to say about whatever the topic is. It's wanting a conversation. That's not the same thing as posting threads just to get attention, and not caring what anyone else's thoughts are on it, and posting only to get attention.

reply

Even a genuine interest is still phishing for replies. Doesn't matter the subject. Nobody starts a thread hoping that nobody will reply.

reply

I do.

reply

That's because you're a secret Stygianatti person.

reply

Classic misdirection straight out of the Stygiannati Stooge's Handbook !

reply

Sure it matters. One is posting because they're interested in what others say in their replies; the other doesn't care what anyone has to say, only in the number of replies. Big difference in motive.

reply

Oh yeah? well, booger brain, so there.

reply

Oh please, you're just looking for attention 😗

reply

hey, i only started threads where I was interested in replies. I've been talking baseball with like minded people.

reply

Sure you did, Stygianatti person.

reply

Ouch! :(

reply

😛

reply

Is being a Stygianatti person good or bad?

reply

I thought it was a person who liked spaghetti made with squid ink more than they should. Maybe I'm wrong? 🤷‍♀️

reply

I thought it was a name for fans of the band Styx?

reply

Must be the portion of the Venn diagram where fans of Styx and out of control fans of squid ink spaghetti intersect.

reply

Not the male and female ones though.

reply

Of course not, don't be daft 🙄

reply

Especially in Moviebuffoon’s world.

reply

I guess it depends on what they're posting about and how often they're doing it. Sometimes they're just interested in a topic and they want to talk about it (sometimes a little too interested). Other times they want to rant about their lives because they feel no one will listen.

And sometimes they're just drunk or stoned.

reply

"And sometimes they're just drunk or stoned."

😄 Yes, there's that too.

reply

YES,THERE IS.

reply

Hey! Who are you calling strunk or doned?

reply

You? 🤷‍♀️

reply

If you think I'm drunk off only 2 beers followed by a shot of whiskey and then 3 more beers with a small bottle of vanilla extract as a chaser, than sure, call me drunk. Also may have breathed in some paint fumes for good measure...

reply

I didn't know about all that. I was just counting the two bowls in your bong 🤷‍♀️

reply

That was almost 40 full minutes ago though

reply

Never mind then. Doesn't count.

reply

some people crave attention more than others. we see it in every aspect of life. we also tend to pick our spots, where we are more comfortable standing out.

there's not much more too it than that. of course, like anything, the desire for attention can assume manic / pathological proportion, but i dont' see too much of that here. there is a forum on my hometown newspaper which became unmoderated, and it is just a cesspool of hostility. kind of funny.

this place is moderated. that makes a LOT of difference. i got cautioned for starting a few threads that were only obliquely 'political', and they got ditched. it sort of pissed me off, but I appreciate that someone is holding standards here. it shows.

reply

I HATE ATTENTION...I DO EVERYTHIN IN MY POWER TO AVOID IT...INCLUDING FLASHING.

reply

Sure thing Kowalski. 🙄 Who are you trying to fool...us or yourself? That uppercase key still on the blitz? 🤔

reply

NO DONT RELY...I HATE THE ATTENTION...I HATE IT SOOO MUCH😄

reply

I have just been informed I have to write 100 times “I will not bump Kowalski’s reply.” So here it goes: “I will not bump Kowalski’s reply 100 times.” 🙅🏼‍♀️

reply

I have pondered such many times. I agree with your assessment...being needy followed by an attention getter via Social Media and/or video. I’ve watched videos of people opening an appliance! I’ve watched self made videos of people believing they are the greatest chefs on television. I recall one I couldn’t finish watching because her kitchen sink and surrounding areas were nasty looking! No thanks! And dammit it you’re going to do a self made video on how to repair a toilet...please clean the damn thing first! Then there’s the self made model videos! Good Grief! Don’t they have a mirror? I can see the flab, and the extra butts...can’t they? Many times I have thought to myself the person I see in a video has to be in love with their self. Why else be such an exhibitionist?

reply

I am a loner...a dangerous loner.

But no man is a island, most of us are peninsulas.

With this site, I get the little attention I need without the engery and hassel of real relationships.

And some fine movie talk!
