Over-saturating the Superhero genre

This is not a rant or a hate post. Just a discussion. Do YOU think they'll oversaturate the market? Like I'm genuinely wondering. Cause looking at the release dates for next year, they're releasing AT LEAST 10 superhero movies. Divided between DC, Marvel & Sony. And those are just the confirmed ones

And that's NOT even including all the dozen shows that are currently on & in production. I know all this will end, eventually but since like every other blockbuster is turning out to be a ComicBook movie & every other big streaming service is working on their big superhero show, are they gonna be the cause of their own downfall?

I'm a huge ComicBook fan but there's such a thing as too much of a good thing. I guess part of me is just afraid that they'll make people sick of the genre. Some people are already sick of seeing & hearing about Superhero content

reply

They already have oversaturated it. There have been 22 Marvel movies since 2008. And those are just Marvel movies.

reply

I know. But they only released one film a year at first. Then 2. They didn't even start releasing 3 films a year till like 2017.

But now, going forward, seems like each major studio might be releasing up to 5 superhero films a year. And again, that's not even including all the shows they're working on

reply

years ago and i don't even watch.

reply

This. Every time I get accepted to take a moviegoer survey, I'm abruptly disqualified when I answer that don't like superhero movies. Hollywood producers are so obsessed with making this stuff that they ignore people with differing interests. I'm beginning to think the only genre that will survive the superhero craze is Horror.

reply

I got into an argument one time when I said that there were too many superhero films. The other person said, "just don't watch them if you don't like them." And I said I don't, but they're getting rid of the option for the rest of us. I showed him a picture of a movie theatre where all 10 screens were Captain Marvel. Then they said, "if people want to see it, you can't complain where there's so many screens." Which one is it, do I have to option to watch something different, or is the option not there because people want to see it?

reply

This is why the trend bothers me so much. There's going to be so much focus on comic book heroes that supporting new dramas isn't going to be an option. We will have to just see old films with deeper themes.

reply

100%

With all the Marvel tv shows set for Disney + and new movies it's way too much.

reply

Remember when people were complaining that the marvel films & tv shows weren't really connected? Well, now they are. And you kinda have to watch 'em. Cause ya know, "It's all connected" & stuff

Honestly, I've chatted with a few people who are just not interested in most of the announced Disney+ shows. They're like, 'It feels like homework'. You have to watch this stuff to keep up with that stuff

I haven't gotten burnt out on the genre...yet. But I have a bad feeling that I will be in the next 2-3 years. A couple of my friends genuinely gave up after Endgame. They were like, 'Yeah, I'm done'.

reply

Exactly. I'm not a huge comic fan, so I wanted to watch the movies that interested me, not all of them. I don't want to watch all the tv shows either. I didn't watch the winter soldier one, and I doubt I will watch any of the others. It shouldn't be like work.

I didn't watch any of the Chicago PD, Fire etc because of the crossover episodes either. I'm just not interested in having to watch something just to know what is happening in the one show I want to watch.

reply

Reminds me of this past season's DCtv crossover. I've basically given up on the CW shows. I think I was just watching Flash or Arrow at the time

Anyways, you kinda had to watch the individual shows in order to keep up with the main plot & enjoy the crossover. Cause it had a lot of characters that I genuinely didn't even know or care about. Past crossover were self contained affairs. Which I genuinely loved

A crossover of any show should stand on its own in my opinion. Having to watch every single show in order to enjoy a crossover just feels like too much work

reply

Yeah, the various Marvel shows and films are now TOO connected, there are things where you won't know what's happening in one unless you've seen others. I've had to tell people that they won't understand the beginning of "Infinity War" unless they've seen "Thor: Ragnarok", and not everyone likes the idiotic Thor movies (I love them). Because yeah, once you're obliged to watch certain movies, it's less fun.

I mean, I love great-looking escapist fluff full of hot guys, so yeah, I think I'll keep watching the Marvel franchise for some time to comes. Definitely gotta see the next Thor movie and the Doctor Strange sequel, right? But I don't say I'm going to watch everything Marvel sends down the pike, especially the oh so serious stuff that's no fun.

reply

I kind of want to watch Loki just because think Tom Hiddleston is hot, but I just don't know if I can do it.

reply

I definitely want to watch "Loki", because Loki is one of the most enjoyable Marvel characters. He's a hilarious bitch most of the time, Hiddleston is great in the role, and I want to see what Loki did with his fine self during the Snap Era.

My theory is that he found himself stuck on Earth, presumed dead, so hauled ass as far from the Avengers and Asgardians as he could go, and spent five years partying in Sydney.

reply

Young people seem to like them and they are profitable.

Its nice to see an actual superhero fan recognise this.
I gave up on it years ago , Spiderman 2 i think.
Although did go back to watch "dredd" to test out the 3d - that s pretty good!

I know you dont wanna hear but i hope they actually do "implode" under the weight of their own costumes!

reply

WELL,YOU ARE VASTLY UNINFORMED ON THE TOPIC THEN.

reply

I'm sure i'd lose in Marvel quiz , but i've sure as hell seen enough
Pretty simple formula - man or woman with stoopid magic powers , dresses up in stoopid costume , usually to fight another guy with stoopid unlikey power in a stoopid costume..
Sometimes they form gangs to fight evil .. or good i assume
only the comedey ones are any good , like Mysterymen
amirite?

what new developments have they been since: Man with ever increasingly stupid superpower fights evil?

reply

LIKE ACTION MOVIES?...BAD GUYS DO BAD,GOOD GUYS USE ACTION TO FIGHT THEM...

OR WESTERNS?...BAD COWBOY/GOOD COWBOY...SHOOT SHOOT SHOOT.

OR HORROR?...PEOPLE KILLED...A EVIL KILLER...STOP THEM.

WHEN YOU BREAK AN ENTIRE THING DOWN TO SUCH SIMPLE TERMS JUST TO VALIDATE YOUR EXTREMELY OUT OF DATE AND ELITIST OPINION....ITS EMBARRASSING.

reply

Elitist opinion! ouch!
I didnt even break out the "Comics are for kids" card!

Its not the good fighting evil thing, obviously
its powers and costumes
mainly the powers . The powers mean all rules are out of the window . they can be not quite enough when the plot requires it , and more than enough when the plot requires it.

out of date?
whats chnaged?
These new ones spewing out of Marvel's ass are better than the superman & batman films of the 80s?

YES...THEY ARE...BY FAR...I DON'T SHARE YOUR NOSTALGIA FOR SHITTY SUPERMAN FLICKS AND MEDIOCRE BATMAN MOVIES.

reply

for some of us, there's no such thing as too much.

even when they're kinda undeniably terrible, i love cbms, and i will continue to inhale them as long as they're produced.

i'm a bit indifferent to the series (though i loved the first few episodes of wandavision), but i'll watch them. i'll always prefer the controlled structure of a movie over a series every time.

COUNT ME AMONGST THAT TRIBE.

half of netflix offerings involve some element of overt fantasy, whether supernatural or over-the-top stuff.

i started a thread somewhat on this topic awhile back - the juvenilization of America Culture.

if you are older, like I am, you seen the trend and likely find it off-putting, in the excess.

super-hero movies have no appeal to me at all - if they were infrequent, i would perhaps find them entertaining.

NO...ITS THE SENIORIZATION OF YOU.

I think the market was oversaturated already and then Covid hit and there was a much needed break. So I expect it to get back to the pre-covid levels next year. These films will continue until they are no longer making massive amounts of money. I do think some of them are quite formulaic and boring. Every once in a while there is a really good one though. It will be interesting to see what happens next with the MCU. They have played their big cards and wrapped up the long story so we'll see if they can maintain the continued success at the box office. The purchase of the X-Men will give them a much needed new cast of popular characters. Meanwhile DC is rebooting Superman and Batman again.

Personally, I would much prefer a series as to a film as you can expand the characters and world. I really enjoyed the adult oriented Marvel series on Netflix, especially DareDevil and Jessica Jones. I think a series with Batman would be great instead of having multiple shows around Batman that just exclude him lol. I would even prefer that to a film.

reply

Indeed. I, too, am/was a comic book fan. I would watch every single capeshit movie that came along. Now the frequency coupled with the drop in quality make me miss at least half of them. I am only looking forward to Dr Strange 2, Black Adam, and Loki. Probably will not see any others (although I didn't think I'd watch Wandavision and ended up watching and liking it).

They are wringing all the cash that they can from the genre. For them, there is no "over saturation;" only a well that is still pumping.
