Are there any remakes/reboots that would make your list of favourite movies?

I honestly can't think of any.

The Thing, The Fly and Evil Dead are all top horror remakes…Friday The 13th and A Nightmare On Elm Street we’re not so good.

reply

I like The Fly. Way better than the original too.

reply

For me there are at least 3 in my top 50:

Ben-Hur (1959) #1
The Departed (2006) #6
The Ten Commandments (1956) #42

reply

"Departed" would be the closest one for me.

reply

Forever Amber. The book is one of my favorites, but unfortunately the 1947 movie was severely cleaned up and it would a great period piece with all of the juicy stuff left in.

reply

I remember back in 1988 TBS promoting that movie a lot. I wasn’t into older films that much back then but for the past ten years or so I have become an avid TCM watcher but I haven’t seen it played.

reply

It's been a while since it was on and despite it's flaws, I love the movie.

reply

Never heard of that.

reply

It's set during the English Civil War and the restoration of Charles II to the throne. Amber is a 17th century Scarlett O'Hara only she makes Scarlett look like a nun compared to some of the things she does.

reply

Oh, that's definitely not my thing.

reply

I read that book multiple times long long ago but the film was disappointing. In would make an excellent miniseries now if they could just film the book.

reply

Totally agree.

reply

Only 2:

The Thing (1982) top 20
True Grit (2010) top 200

reply

True Grit is one of the few Westerns I really like. Never saw the original though.

reply

WHAT IN THE EVERLASTING FUCK?...ARE YOU FUCKING SERIOUS?...JESUS CHRIST...YOU ARE NOT ONLY THE WORST...YOU ARE POORLY EDUCATED IN THE ARENA OF FILM AS WELL...UGH.

reply

Westerns are very one note.

reply

YOU HAVE MISSED ONE OF THE MULTI NOTE CLASSICS.

reply

I just haven't got around to watching it.

reply

I GREW UP IN A DUKE HOUSE...IN FACT THERE IS STILL A FRAMED JOHN WAYNE WALL IN THE HOUSE THAT MY GRANDMOTHER DECORATED...I OWN EVERY WAYNE FILM AVAILABLE TO OWN AND HAVE SEEN THEM ALL...TRUE GRIT,THE SEARCHERS AND THE SHOOTIST ARE HIS MASTERPIECES.

reply

You grew up in David Duke's house? That explains a lot.

reply

True Grit remake was one note for me as I couln't believe how much of the original Grit dialog they re-used. Although replacing homely Kim Darby was a good move..

reply

Dawn of the Dead (2004)

reply

Not one of my favourite movies, but I love it. Like it better than the original.

reply

WHAT IN THE EVERLASTING FUCK?...ARE YOU FUCKING SERIOUS?...JESUS CHRIST...YOU ARE NOT ONLY THE WORST...YOU ARE POORLY EDUCATED IN THE ARENA OF FILM AS WELL...UGH.

reply

Chill. It's an 8/10 but I wouldn't say it's one of my favourites of all time.

reply

Like it better than the original.

FUCK YOU.

reply

It is. I checked the book of facts.

reply

OH BOY...IF YOU WEREN'T THE WORST ALREADY...OOOHHH ...THIS IS BAD.😐

reply

I was going to say no, but then I remembered Sword Master (2016) is a remake of Death Duel (1977).

reply

I'd probably have to go way back. Although the Footloose remake was very close to the original and almost as good which was surprising. But generally I am not a fan of remakes and reboots especially if the film get rebooted every couple of years.

reply

Oceans 11 (2001)
Magnificent Seven (1960)

reply

Oceans 11 was really good one of my favorite heist films ever.

Another great remake of a heist film is The Thomas Crown affair with Pierce Brosnan and Rene Russo. I really loved that movie with this time a happy ending and giving a little more action to it.

reply

I always preferred the stylishness and harder edge of the original. I was quite grumpy about the remake the first time I saw it though it's not a bad film in its own right.

reply

Both takes work well with that story the more dramatic take with the more cynical Thomas Crown and the more light hearted take on it which is a romantic comedy with some action in it.

But the story works surprisingly well in both ways and I did like Pierce a lot as Thomas Crown he was the perfect man to portray him in the remake.

reply

I think the original Thomas Crown Affair was the first grownup film I saw in the cinema - I may be a little biased 😀

reply

A very good film to start with.

As I said loved both a little more the remake but the original with Steve McQueen was really good.
