Good Movies About Cults?

A feature film, not a documentary (although there are some really good ones)

Here's one I just saw and liked, "Love Exposure"

The Sacrament (2014)

I agree on the Sacrement. Heavily based on the Jim Jones cult that was mass murdered by their leader. It has one of the most harrowing death scenes I've ever seen.

KEVIN SMITH'S RED STATE.

THE WICKER MAN? NOEMOJI

Holy Smoke (1999)

interesting, and thank you... I've seen 2-3 movies by this director, and especially liked, "Sweetie", as well as "An Angel At My Table"

You might like Gillian Armstrong, "My Brilliant Career" if you don't already

reply

I think the only other movie I've seen by this director is The Piano, but those other ones look interesting too.

reply

Masada. It's an old great TV mini series about the Zealot cult holding out in Masada against Romans.

"Midsommar".

"The Wicker Man" (1973). The 2000s remake is NOT good. Well, entertaining, but not good.

reply

ah ok... I tried seeing the original (1973?) a couple of years ago, but couldn't get into it. I'll give it another shot soon. Thanks!

reply

I actually saw the original "Wicker Man" a few weeks ago for the first time, and it was NOT what I expected!

A very odd film, but very original and involving.

reply

I always prefer the original. I'll put out an automatic DVR on Robin Hardy

reply

Midsommar is a classic.

reply

Never heard of the genre, "Folk horror"
I read a sentence about this.. I've always tried to avoid learning a thing about religion. Is it a big factor in this movie?

reply

Oh yes. They create a narrative, in rich color & texture & dance, of a pastoral insular cult, full of ritual & adaptive survival/sustaining mechanisms. Its a bit of a riff on the Nazi cult of the peasantry.

reply

"Midsommar" is a damn good movie, and I'd call it more "psychological horror" than "folk horror", as what matters the most is what's going on in the protagonist's head.

As for religion, well, the thread is about movies involving cults.

reply

I'll try to check it out, thanks.

I'm trying to think of cult movies, but the only thing comes to mind are all the documentaries, usually centered around sexual power.
