The Japanese needed to be beat into the dirt and very convincingly but we shielded their Emperor from any public shame for the surrender so as to keep the populace on the side of peace, we rewrote their constitution and molded them into an excellent ally for decades to follow. We also removed much of their military capacity and spent a fortune feeding and funding them during recovery. It was a stark contrast to what was foolishly dealt out to Germany post WWI. The Japanese rebuilding was a very smart plan...execute the guilty but show mercy to the average soldier and civilian. Feed them, cut deals and rebuild.
Thank god the Soviet Union wasn’t involved in the take over of Japan. Think of all the countries that were split after WWII and the disastrous results in the communist run side.
shareWe intentionally gave extensive aid and reformed their government and military system in Japan so that they could act as a bulwark and provide airstrips against Soviet -Communist-aggression in Asia.
It was smart statesmanship, our generous and largely non punitive aid benefited both Japan and the U.S.
It's all worked out fairly well thus far.
