Is Home Alone a Christmas movie?

Since my post about Die Hard really was just because I liked a stupid video I shared that no one watched and it really devolved into the debate...I need to ask. Is Home Alone a Christmas movie?

I mean if you set it at a different time of year, like a summer vacation where many families went away it would still work. But...it is specifically set at Christmas.

reply

FOR THE RECORD...I WATCHED AND VERY MUCH ENJOYED YOUR VIDEO...ALSO...ANY MOVIE YOU ASSOCIATE WITH CHRISTMAS IS A CHRISTMAS MOVIE...DOESN'T HAVE TO BE OVERLY FESTIVE OR EVEN SET AT CHRISTMAS AT ALL...SPACEBALLS IS AN EASTER MOVIE FOR ME.

reply

Well thank you. I'm glad someone did. 🀣

Oh, is Home Alone another one that's up for debate?

I love the Is it or isn't a Christmas movie discourse, because it's quite possibly the most unimportant thing anyone can ever get into a disagreement about.

I'm going to attempt this potentially controversial definition (and then I'm going to run away): If it's part of your traditional/annual holiday season movie programme because it feels festive to you and puts you in the mood for Christmas... it's a Christmas movie.

DUDE...I ALWAYS ENJOY YOUR POSTS...YOU SHOULD TOTALLY WATCH MOVIES WITH THE GANG ON FRIDAY AND SATURDAY NIGHTS....THE MOVIECHAT MOVIE CLUB IS ROCKING!

Isn't it though? But it's also harmless and I don't think that it's insulting to anyone, so here we are. πŸ˜€

I do agree that if it's part of one's Christmas traditions, who cares?

reply

ANYTHING SPOOKY IS APPROVED FOR HALLOWEEN...SO ANYTHING FESTIVE IS APPROVED FOR CHRISTMAS.

reply

Yeah. Harmless. I think that's why it's fun. Seriously, I have these discussions every single year with the same co-worker of mine. The Is it or isn't it a Christmas movie debate is itself a Christmas tradition for me now.

We've never done Home Alone though. I'll have to find out what her verdict is.

reply

I like this definition and rolling with it from now on. Good job πŸ‘πŸŽ…

reply

We always watch Home Alone around the holidays.

Gremlins is a good Christmas movie tooπŸ˜€

reply

Home Alone 1 and 2 are Christmas movies. The rest of the series..well.. it doesn’t count anyway.

reply

Given how highly rated it is, I'd say it's the Christmas movie for most people.

reply

I saw your video, but thought I'd post those links to support your case. Maybe I should have said something about the video first.

But yeah, Home Alone is a Christmas movie. I think there's a reason why writers decided to set it at a certain time.

reply

HOME ALONE IS A FAMILY COMEDY...CHRISTMAS IS A PLOT ELEMENT.😘

reply

Add in some F-words and your family comedy goes out the door, the same way as saying it's a plot element makes it not a Christmas movie.

reply

ADD IN SOME FUCKS AND IT NOT A FAMILY COMEDY...EXACTLY...IT'S JUST A COMEDY.

CHRISTMAS IS NOT A GENRE...IT IS A PLOT ELEMENT USED IN MANY GENRES.😘

reply

Foreign film isn't a genre either, but that doesn't mean it's not one and it's definitely not a plot element.

reply

NO IT ISN'T...YOU ARE CORRECT...IT IS AN IMPROMPTU DESIGNATION FOR FILMS FROM OTHER COUNTRIES.

reply

You can't spell "Kowalski" without an "L".

reply

CATS ON THE KEYBOARD...THEY DELETED MY SHIT AS I HIT ENTER...ALL FIXED

reply

Don't lie, I know there's no pussy in your house.

reply

THAT IS TRUE BUT OFF TOPIC.

reply

AN ORGANIZATION TOOL...SAME AS CHRISTMAS MOVIES.

reply

And I'm putting Home Alone in my Christmas section.

reply

I ALSO HAVE A CHRISTMAS SECTION....MAKES PICKING FILMS WITH THE CHRISTMAS PLOT ELEMENT EASIER.😘

reply

I dunno though. Isn't an 'organisation tool' basically the same as a genre?

First definition of genre that comes up when I google it:

a category of artistic composition, as in music or literature, characterized by similarities in form, style, or subject matter. (My emphasis)

I think -- given that films can have multiple genres -- 'Christmas' can be a genre. Foreign movie isn't a genre, or at least not a very useful genre, because it's just too damn broad and genre is supposed to narrow things down for organisation.

reply

CHRISTMAS WOULD BE JUST AS BROAD OF A GENRE AS EVIDENCED BY THE THREADS HERE OF LATE.

IF CHRISTMAS IS A GENRE THEN SURELY HALLOWEEN IS AS WELL...WHAT QUALIFIES?...EVERY HORROR FILM EVER?...OR JUST THE ONES WITH PUMPKINS.

reply

OK. Maybe you're right. The Halloween / horror thing is persuasive.

reply

Is Halloween (1978) a Halloween movie?? πŸ€”

reply

I BELIEVE SO...BUT I DON'T BELIEVE HALLOWEEN TO BE A GENRE....SUB-GENRE MAYBE.

reply

Is Nightmare Before Christmas (1993) A Christmas movie....or a Halloween movie???

reply

It is, it hits all the notes.

John Hughes was a master at capturing that suburban family Christmas, and all that goes into it.

reply

I watched the video and enjoyed it. I was surprised how quickly things deteriorated πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ
