Unpopular opinions: music

What's that band or album, critically acclaimed, that supposedly everyone loves but you just don't seem to care?

To me it's Pink Floyd's the wall

I've listened a handful of times and none of the songs stuck.... Also, were they doing the bassist a favor by letting him "sing"?

I used to not care, but currently I might actually hate this album

The big name corporate rock bands from the 70s that the lemming lame-o crowd pushed on everybody. If music were food, these people would live on a diet of cucumber sandwiches with mayonnaise on white bread...with the crusts cut off.

The Eagles, especially 'Hotel California', Fleetwood Mac, Kansas and the like.

reply

Probably an even more unpopular opinion, but I can't really name one coz I don't particularly like most albums. They're often just a few good songs and a lot of filler imo.

reply

I MISS THE DAYS OF GETTING A NEW ALBUM AND SITTING WITH IT FOR A DAY...DAYS...WEEKS...MONTHS...READING THE WHOLE BOOKLET...REALLY DIGESTING EVERY TRACK.

reply

You can still do all that now, if anything CDs are much cheaper at thrift stores if you want anything before 2010. And I did all those things too, but I still only ever really replayed like two songs and then tried to like the other songs out of some misplaced sense of loyalty, and never spent much time on the album booklet beyond the first week of buying it.

reply

You mean you don't like albums in general and prefer to cherry pick tracks? Nothing wrong with that

reply

Something like that, yeah.

reply

EVERYONE SEEMS TO BE OLDER THAN ME...ALL THE BANDS AND ARTISTS ARE BANDS AND ARTISTS THAT WERE ALREADY ESTABLISHED AND ADULTS WHEN I WAS A KID.

MEAT LOAF IS BETTER THAN ALL OF THESE OTHER ARTISTS ANYWAY.

reply

I like cheese in my meat loaf.

reply

Anything by the Beach Boys but especially the album Pet Sounds. I don't care how many layers it has or how some guy who made it is supposedly some production musical genius. If I hear it playing I have to leave the area.

Also if someone mentions owning Pet Sounds on vinyl I automatically dismiss their taste in everything and dislike them until proven otherwise.

reply

WHAT IF THEY OWN PET SOUNDS ON TWO-DISC SPECIAL EDITION COMPACT DISC SET ?....ASKING FOR A RIEND.

reply

In that situation they aren't also talking about how it "sounds the best" and there might be some hope for the person.

Maybe.

reply

GOOD TO KNOW.🫡

reply

Don't think I've ever heard pet sounds before 😂 probably know a bunch of songs and yes I've heard people raving about it and how one of the guys was really obsessed in making it perfect

reply

The closest thing I can liken the album Pet Sounds to is taking a terrible Beach Boys song like Kokomo, slowing it down to about 60-75% speed, putting filters on it so it sounds muddy/washed out, and then remixing it with some random elevator music. Apparently the guy who made it was schizophrenic and took a lot of LSD. I think you'd have to have both of those qualities to actually enjoy Pet Sounds.

Just the thought of hearing it right now makes me angry. You're a lucky person for both not having heard it and for not having to hear pretentious snobs explain to you why it's one of the most important albums of all time as they pull out the vinyl and offer you either a glass of organic red wine or an expired Pabst that's been sitting in their fridge for who knows how long.

Seriously, the only thing I hate more than the Beach Boys is their album Pet Sounds.

reply

Hahah that was great 😂😂👌

reply

PET SOUNDS WAS A TURNING POINT FOR THE BEACH BOYS...THEY WERE HEADED INA VERY BEATLESESQUE DIRECTION...BRIAN WILSON WAS INDEED A MUSICAL GENIUS ON THE CUSP OF GREATNESS....SHAME HE WAS ALSO EXTREMEMLY MENTALLY ILL.

reply

Here's a challenge: describe the album Pet Sounds without using the word genius.

Using a word like that to describe something is a great way to say something without actually saying anything. Kind of like how Viggo Mortensen scolded his kid for using the word "interesting" in the movie Captain Fantastic. When you see the word genius over and over without any explanation for why something is good, it's probably safe to assume it's some pretentious crap that people pat themselves on the back for liking.

In fact, if you go to the album page on YouTube here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mh_yhTyae08 you'll see that every other post claims that this album is "genius." Too funny.

reply

I DID NOT DESCRIBE PET SOUNDS AS GENIUS...I SAID BRIAN WILSON WAS A MUSICAL GENIUS...PET SOUNDS IS AN EXCELLENT ALBUM THE I ENJOY QUITE A BIT.

IT IS UNIQUE AND SOULFUL ALBUM...FEATURING CAREFULLY CRAFTED POP SYMPHONIES THAT FIT INTO AN OVERALL NARRATIVE...SOMBER AND INTROSPECTIVE...PET SOUNDS IS A GROUNDBREAKING AND MELANCHOLY ALBUM THAT UTILIZES EVERY INSTRUMENT AND SOUND IMAGINABLE TO TELL IT'S STORY.

IT'S A SHAME THEY NEVER FOLLOWED UP ON THAT ALBUM...THEY WERE HEADED IN AN AMAZING DIRECTION...OH...I NEVER USED THE WORD GENIUS.😘

reply

You did it...you used a vague, generic description that could have accurately been applied to a Nine Inch Nails album that sampled the sounds of slamming doors and breaking glass, and that sounds like it was made by ChatGPT, but that wasn't part of the criteria I suppose.

I'll give you this about Pet Sounds; even though I absolutely despise it and anyone that owns it on vinyl as some badge that represents their supposedly great taste in music, the song God Only Knows is actually decent. In regards to everything else on it I'd rather hear Kermit the Frog sing Kokomo on repeat for 3 hours vs listening to 30 minutes of Pet Sounds.

reply

I AM NO MUSIC CRITIC...I JUST LIKE THE WAY THE ALBUM SOUNDS...I ADMIT TO USING A THESAURUS WHILE ATTEMPTING TO CONSTRUCT AN AUTHENTIC SOUNDING REVIEW...BUT...IT WAS AN ACTUAL THESAURUS...PAPER AND EFFORT.

reply

Fair enough. Anyway I'm the one with the unpopular opinion right?

As an aside, do you know how many posts it takes before this oppressive time requirement between posts goes away?

reply

I HONESTLY DON'T REMEMBER...AT THIS POINT IT FEELS LIKE I HAVE BEEN HERE FOREVER...HOW LONG IS THE WAIT BETWEEN POSTS?

reply

I can't say exactly but it's something like 8-10 minutes, enough to make responding like this kind of a drag.

reply

I DON'T THINK IT LASTS MUCH LONGER...YOU'RE ALMOST THERE...BASED ON RECENT EXPERIENCE WITH SOMEONE ELSE NEW.

reply

That's good to know. Thanks for that.

I bet someone who owns Pet Sounds on vinyl wouldn't have been cool enough to respond.

I saw some posts about that. If I can get away from the lady then that sounds like a good time.

Thanks for the invite!

reply

He copied that from somewhere or it's AI. Doesn't sound like him at all. haha.

reply

FALSE.

reply

I should believe it because you are such a honest guy, right?

reply

Not a fan of Metallica. I had a few friends in high school that were fanatics when it came to Metallica. I never could understand the appeal.

reply

I rediscovered metallica recently and battery from master of puppets quickly became one of my all time favorite riffs. I was shocked at the precision of James hetfield, the man is a true stage beast

reply

As a guitar player, I really love David Gilmour's playing on "The Wall." He's one of the greats and that second (ending) guitar solo on "Comfortably Numb" is one of the great all-time musical moments, IMO (The first solo is pretty awesome also...but it's the second one that really gives me chills to this day).

One thing that cracks me up here are all the "rate this song"/"What do you think of this song?" threads that get posted here. I used to be a lot like the posters in that there were certain artists/songs I couldn't stand or didn't "get." What I came around to realize over the years, though, is this...I think it's perfectly fine if there is an artist/song that you don't like/can't stand/etc. However, just because you don't like/can't stand the artist or song, doesn't mean that someone else has to dislike the artist or song also. In other words, like what you like and dislike what you dislike...it's all good! And I feel the same way about movies/actors and actresses also. It's part of what makes the world go 'round! 😃

(Also, just to clarify, I am perfectly OK with seeing posts like this and that people should be free to post whatever they want on things like this. I just wanted to give my views on where I'm coming from on these.)

reply

Ah yes the comfortably numb solo is a true god send. First time I heard it was in a 90s knebworth performance, it was pouring rain on David's red strat. I'm actually a guitar player myself and have covered that solo based on that live performance

reply

Mainstream music really needs to take advantage of the soothing soulful rhythm of smoke detectors.

reply

I absolutely loathe Nirvana and can't think of a single song of theirs I wouldn't rather listen to the literal sound of nails on a chalkboard for as many minutes.

reply

That is interesting, Nirvana was one of my earliest musical love affairs, the songs were just catchy and aggressive. The day Kurt died everyone was asking me how I felt as I was probably the only one listening to "devil music" lol

reply

THAT'S SAD...NIRVANA ARE AMAZING...AND CONTINUE TO FIND NEW FANS IN NEW GENERATIONS OF KIDS...MY DAUGHTER LOVES NIRVANA.
