Super Bowl Thread - Chiefs win 25-22 in overtime!!!

49ers at Chiefs ------- Chiefs all the way. They are peaking at the right time.

Quick question:-

If that final catch hadn't been in the end zone, there would only have been maybe two seconds left. Would the Chiefs have had time to call a time out to stop the clock and kick the field goal or was it all on that final play?

reply

they would have went into the second quarter and finish set of downs. the time on the clock was meaningless.

EDIT: If the score is still tied at the end of an overtime period — or if the second team’s initial possession has not ended — the teams will play another overtime period. Play will continue regardless of how many overtime periods are needed for a winner to be determined.

By the way, happy birthday!

it was only first down. if the clock would have run out, they would have switched ends and it would have been second and goal.

reply

Thanks for explaining.

Looks like you edited out your original explanation though. It was the second point you originally had there I was wondering about. i.e. if they'd been short with a completed pass, everyone would have been calling time out, to ensure the field goal could be taken.

The latest NFL rule is that they are entitled to complete their initial possession, regardless of time left on the clock. If they did not tie or win after their first possession, they lose.

The original overtime rule was that the first team to score wins. That gave too much advantage to whoever won the coin toss. So it was changed in recent years, to give the other team a possession to tie or win. There was only one Super Bowl overtime before today.

They introduced that first team to score rule in football (soccer) for a while as well. It was terrible as it just seemed unsporting to kill the game dead on a play like that. But I can see that would be even worse in American football as, like you said, surely whoever wins the toss is likely to get a field goal attempt...

I guess that initial possession rule is similar to rugby union - play continues after the clock runs out until the play goes dead either through a score or end of the play phase, with a foul / turnover.

Why is John Elway on stage?

reply

The CEO gets presented with the trophy?!

reply

It is typically the owner of the team, or the leader of the ownership group. They let the top players pass it around.

Why would anyone support anything that comes out of San Francisco?

SF Bay Area native😎 I was hoping for them to win their 6th SB!

you missed a good game

reply

I saw the second half. It wasn't as exciting as one might think based on the results.

reply

Have to say I had been saying I wasn't going to watch it, but I did.
That was a hell of a game. Neither of those teams have anything to be embarrassed about.

reply

I didn't tune in until the 3d quarter, & was surprised it was only 10-3 at that time!

reply

looked like the game was going to be a dud. the ending made it a classic.
