What did you bunkerbusters watch this week? (06/16-06/22)

Ahh, summer… it doesn’t get much better than this.

You watched movies did you? Have you seen these:

The chair (2023 YouTube): This 22 minutes short film was scary effective. I watched it at night with earphones as my wife was sleeping. Twice I had those shivers run across my entire body. Really freaky stuff. My rating: 7/10

The August incident : Shared with me by Anotherday, this short zombie film is an amateur project amongst friends so it obviously shows but it doesn’t mean I can’t review it. I didn’t care much for the documentary format but if it was Joseph’s voice narrating it would’ve been way better. Thankfully, reporter Scott was hot and brought a contagious energy for the short time he was on screen. Should’ve been more of him. As for that cop dude playing with his sleeve button, he talked way too much for too long. Lots of people talking a lot actually. I wanted more zombies! Hehe Otherwise, I don’t think I could’ve done better myself so, there is that! My rating: 4/10

Sisu (2023 Prime): Mesmerizing and captivating, gore and violent, thrilling and stressful, this WWII film was quite the treat. Quite the treat indeed! I was going for a 9 before the final plane scene. It was a bit too cartoony and ludicrous. I would’ve preferred a more down to earth and brutal outcome. Still, I strongly recommend it. 8.5/10

The dark Crystal (1982 Blu-ray): I watched it with my 9 year old son and we did not like it. Well, not at first. Then we started making fun of it and we enjoyed it more. The more we made fun of it the more it became… interesting? It’s like they tried to create the most nasty looking and disgusting puppets and although I believed in the world they created, I struggled in believing in there it’s inhabitants. As for the story, it might have been original back then and might even have paved the way for similar « quest films » but all in all, Labyrinth this wasn’t. Sometimes it looked more like a dark and ancient version of a Power rangers bad guy’s lair kind of stuff. One of the puppet even reminded of a French Canadian show I watched as a child. And that’s not a compliment. It was called Bibi et Geneviève. I mean, look at this guy: https://www.archambault.ca/Pages/Details?lang=en-ca&id=969929&cat=1884314 . I could describe the feeling watching this movie as the same feeling when you lift a rock and there’s a bunch of disgusting insects beneath but you can’t help but to look at them out of sheer curiosity and you’re sort of impressed by the nastiness. Anyways, it’s really lacking something to make it truly exceptional to my eyes. Maybe if I had seen it as a child… IDK. My rating: 6/10

Reflections of evil (2002 Tubi): A meditation on the reflections of what the fuck was this fucking movie and why did it last over 2 hours!?!?! Took me 3 frickin’ days to watch it!! T’was Fred’s recommandation… Fuck you Fred! Just kidding. I have a craving to watch the weirdest shit possible? Well that’s the price to pay. Not the strangest film I’ve seen but I’d venture a guess that it could be the case for most people that will watch it after reading this review. I won’t even say anything about the movie because frankly, I’m just speechless. You insist and you want me to say something about the film? Okey then; There’s a crazy guy with a hundred headphones, pillows under his too many shirts and he’s walking in the street selling watches he never makes profit on. (I don’t think all street people are aware they were in a film. There’s also an old couple watching TV and it has images. Very many images. There you go. One question I have is how did he get all the copyrights to show all those clips and he use all those songs?? I truly wonder. My rating: 🌜🎋🪸/🪸🎋🌛

The green inferno (2015 Prime): I have to say I fairly enjoyed this one. It’s well-made, it does with it has to do and pretty well at that. I couldn’t wait for the annoying crew to get eaten BUT, I’m taking .5 points away because spoiler: the most despicable character (leader guy) didn’t die!!!! Urgh! The thing I appreciated the most about this is the fact that it almost always take place during the day, under a bright sunshine and the cinematography is very vivid. My rating: 6.5/10

Kill chain (Friday night special): What a fraud of a movie. It pretends it has Nicolas Cage in it but it doesn’t have him very much. The first 25 minutes got me engaged only to let me down with a confusing, over-convoluted crime story. The last 20 minutes had some good violent moments but not merely enough to compensate for the drag that we had to for through prior. The settings and lighting both felt very cheap too. My rating: 4/10

Slumber party massacre (Friday late night special): It has quite a few things going for it but too many off-screen kills, darkly lit scenes and unoriginal story prevented it to impress me like the remake did. I liked the score too. My rating: 5.5/10

Final destination 2 (Saturday night special): What a pleasure it was revisiting..

reply

…What a pleasure it was revisiting this one. The first and the fifth are the only ones I’ve seen more than once. It was as good as I remembered it to be. Good movie to just sit back and shove popcorn down your throat. My rating: 7/10

Killer body count (Saturday late night special): Nothing particularly impressive about the body count but when the killings are done, the gore is pretty solid with some nice practical effects. That scene with the girl who received the smoking ball in the face was nasty. The story was mediocre (actually it had potential but they messed up many times), the dialogues trite but the cast was refreshing nonetheless. I feel like this movie is the combination of 2 or 3 movies I saw before. It’s a subgenre I’d call low-budget Cult-thrillers and I really like them. 6/10

Kill Chain 6/10
Slumber party massacre 8/10
Final destination 2 7/10
I think I have seen The Dark Crystal, but don't remember it.

I watched:

Charlotte’s Web 1973 7/10 I liked the animation and the characters. I thought the voice acting was effective and the songs were alright, but none of them were overly memorable to me. Personally, I like the 2006 live action version better, although this one was cute too. I am pretty sure I saw this years ago and didn't remember much, so it was nice to revisti it.

The Kid from Spain 1932 6/10 The opening number is the best. There are some amusing moments, but it is a little uneven and not everything works.

The Aristocats 1970 7/10 I like the animation and the characters. The story isn't as good as some of the other Disney classics though, but it does have cute cats in it.

Fantasia 1940 9/10 Fantastic animation and wonderful music. I don't think it needed to be that long though.

Strike Me Pink 1936 7/10 Some funny moments and nice musical numbers.

The Lorax 2012 6/10 Zac Efron is miscast and his character doesn't act or sound like a 12 year old. The story is alright, but they could have done more with it. I liked the colourful animation and some of the cute characters. The songs were hit and miss with Let It Grow being the best one.

Making Contact 1985 7/10 This is pretty derivative, but has some fun moments. I liked the dummy, the robot, and some of the cute kids.

Meet Me After the Show 1951 6/10 Betty Grable is good and some of the musical numbers are entertaining, but overall the film is just alright.

Molly and Me 1945 5/10 The acting was alright, but I didn't find this very interesting. It felt longer than it was.

The Little Princess 1939 8/10 Shirley Temple is fantastic in this wonderful film.

That Lady in Ermine 1948 6/10 The film looks great. I really like the costumes and the colour. Although the performances are fine, I didn't find the story very engaging or interesting.

Follow the Fleet 1936 6/10 I liked the singing and dancing, but other than that I didn't find the film very entertaining or interesting.

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum 1966 7/10 This has some fun performances and is an enjoyable musical.

Can’t Help Singing 1944 6/10 I found this slow and not very interesting for the most part. I did like the costumes and the singing though.

The Sword in the Stone 1963 6/10 I liked some of the characters and the songs are fine, but the story isn't all that interesting or entertaining.

Flying Down to Rio 1933 7/10 The story isn't that great, but there are some fantastic moments that make up for it.

Will-o’-the-Wisp 2022 7/10 Different than what I expected, but well acted with an interesting story. I wish it had more singing and dancing in it though.

Drive-Away Dolls 2024 6/10 This was alright, but it didn't feel like there was much substance to it. The acting is fine, but it came across as a little hollow to me.

Career Girl 1944 5/10 This was boring and dull for the most part.

For the Love of Mary 1948 6/10 Some amusing moments, but not as enjoyable or entertaining as it should be.

Everybody Sing 1938 6/10 This was alright, a couple entertaining moments.

Poor Little Rich Girl 1936 9/10 I don't think this is one of Shirley's best films, but there are some cute moments.

Final Destination 2 2003 7/10 This is my least favourite of the series, but it's still a fun watch with some fantastic sequences.

Killer Body Count 2024 7/10 I thought this was entertaining with some fun moments and I liked the cast.

Can you believe both movies we watched yesterday had an important character named Eugene!? I mean how crazy is that?

The Lorax: 6.5/10

reply

Yeah, that's wild! Did you do that on purpose? Is your name really Eugene?

reply

I wish!

Thanks for the review. 4/10 is generous.

It was an emotional week of odd family crud, so I went looking for the stupid, odd, and goofy flicks:

1. Alien vs Predator- 6/10. It's just like the books.
2. Dead before dawn- 5/10. It's a zombedy and low budget. It has Brittany Allen which is a big positive.
3. Tom Cats- 6/10. It fails so well you remember it while not knowing why.
4. Almost Heroes- 5/10. Though not as bad as Beverly Hills Ninja, it only works due to the cast. Outside of that, it depends on your mood.
5. Independence day: resurgence- 4/10. There is only one movie in this series.
6. Kill Chain- 4/10. It only killed my will to live
7. Slumber Party Massacre- 6/10. So... many... buttshots...
8. Finall Destination 2- 7/10. It's fun, builds suspended, and entertains.
9. Killer Body Count- 4/10. The second half is a mess. This movie is the equivalent of those videos where they ask women if they'd rather be in the woods with a man or a bear. The author was too on the nose with the messaging to really add anything of value to the subject.

Alien vs Predator: Agreed. 6/10

Almost heroes: I’ve seen this as a kid and I want to be optimistic and say 7/10. After reading what you guys said I’m not sure how it would hold up.

I enjoyed the podcast. I loved how you explained FD2, especially since you quote me! ;) seriously though, it’s so true what you say, I kind of new the scenes but still wondered how each death would end.

🍻

I love almost Heroes but it is flawed.

Bid well with his constant optimism and horrible misfortune is my favorite character.

Movies

-Spider Man (2002)
I had planned on seeing this in theater back in the day, but wasn't able to for some reason. I finally got the chance to do so now. Marvel should take a few cues from this one in order to make a good superhero movie. It's got humor and drama, but it's not too dark or too meta. It's a shame the sequels sucked.

-Striking Distance (1993)
I can't believe how cheap this movie looked, more like a TV pilot or something. The acting was bad, there was hardly any story or supense and the twist was ridiculous.

-The River Wild (1993)
The movie isn't bad, the movie isn't great. It's okay for what it is. I just couldn't help but wonder throughout movie why it was even necessary for the criminals to travel by boat!

-Outbreak (1995)
The movie starts out okay as a sort of realistic "what if" scenario about a virus outbreak, but gets more and more ridiculous (spontaneous mutation into an airborne virus???) after the first act with the final act turning into some kind of Seagal movie. Dustin Hoffman is miscast, Donald Sutherland is a stereotypical cliché villain and Kevin Spacey has stupid hair. Going through Covid, we now all know things would not play out the way it did in the movie. Less army and more political oppression and media manipulation.

TV shows

-Dallas - marathon

-Home Improvement - marathon
I knew the moment was going to come, but I'm gonna stop right here. Season 5 is really when the show goes downhill. Tim gets more stupid and goofy, Jill more whiny and entitled and the humor and everything is just more cartoonish. A shame, because the first 3 seasons especially were good.

-Pacific Blue - marathon
Summertime is the right time for a rewatch!

reply

You should give Tim Allen's show "LAST MAN STANDING" a chance and a DALLAS Marathon?? Wow!! Now that's going way back.. Nothing more satisfying than who shot JR??

reply

I have seen Last Man Standing, but I just didn't enjoy it as much. Tim Allen is too much of a grumpy old man for my taste and the daughters just annoyed the heck out of me.

Nothing beats the old school soaps! I'm gonna do a Dynasty rewatch very soon as well.🙂

reply

Nothing beats the old school soaps

What about watching some Corrie?

reply

I've never really watched Coronation Street, but I did do a rewatch of 1995-2002 episodes of Eastenders last year.

reply

Cool

reply

They just stopped airing the reruns of Road to Avonlea here and I’m sad. I want more. The collection is 150$ on Amazon…
Maybe on my birthday!

reply

Ah man, that's just stupid! You're sure you can't watch it anywhere online?

reply

I think AppleTV but I’ll have to go to my parents for that.

reply

Spider-man: 7/10

Outbreak: 7/10

River wild: Due for rewatch

reply

No man, Spider Man is a thousand times better than Outbreak!

reply

Meh, Maguire was not great. Garfield sucked even more.
Holland is the only Spider-man in my mind.

reply

Yuck, no! Holland looks like a cross between a 12 year old boy and an old man.

reply

😂 that’s funny!

reply

It’s The Euros, so mostly the footie ⚽️ I did manage to squeeze in: -
Parasite (2019) - My wife was expecting a Korean horror film, bless her. Anyway, we enjoyed it; dark humour, plenty of twists, good acting : 7.75/10.

reply

Parasite: Agreed. 8/10

reply

I purchased and watched the following movies on Blu Ray: HOLLOW MAN, FULL METAL JACKET & JURASSIC PARK and 2 days ago, I purchased HEAT(1995) on Blu Ray

reply

HOLLOW MAN: haven’t seen since the theatre.

FULL METAL JACKET: 8.5/10

JURASSIC PARK: 8/10

HEAT: 8/10

reply

Well, HOLLOW MAN was certainly better than the Invisible Man with that one actress with the whole story being centered around spousal abuse and made men out to be villains in the end

reply

Rosemary & Thyme pilot episode.

Very pleasant. Think Hallmark Murder Mysteries but with old British ladies who like gardening.

reply

Hehe, nice!

reply

I liked Rosemary and Thyme as well. I just started watching Harry Wild 2022, with Jane Seymour as a private detective, fun murder she wrote like show on Acorn.

reply

White of the Eye (1987) 5/10 A serial killer movie with Cathy Moriarty and David Keith the dad from Firestarter. The 1st half is very boring and the second half is just really weird. Didn't really make much sense to me.
