Are there any recent performances in acting that have really impressed you?

The one that comes to my mind is Ncuti Gatwa (Sex Education, newest Dr. Who, I believe) in Masters of War. I had only seen him in Sex Education where he is so boisterous and expressive and then saw him in MOW and it was like watching a completely different actor and I really like it when that happens, too.

Oh, one other one was when Emma Stone portrayed different emotions in the scene in LA LA Land. That was so fascinating and proved to me that she is a very gifted actor.

Recent.. wow.. thinking

Kerri Russel was good (AGAIN) in Antlers but the film was a hot mess. The lead actress in Starry Eyes was excellent but that probably considered old now.

Nothing stands out for the Guys side but I dont watch tons of series anymore because binge watching is like a black hole for me due to the time it takes to get a conclusion to a story arc. I didnt see Oppenheimer yet because I value my hearing but Im sure Murphy is excellent as usual. Nick Cage excellent in Mandy but its a crazy film.

I search out and watch a lot of older films so this is kind of difficult. Anything pops in my head I will try and put it in your thread. Theres likely more great performances but nothing comes to mind as a stand out.

Some recent ones:

Mads Mikkelsen delivers an all-time career best performance in Another Round (2020). Should've been a shoe-in for an Oscar nom. There's something revelatory about an already great actor completely blowing it out of the water.

On the flipside, Marshawn Lynch surpasses expectations as a well-meaning but hopelessly out of touch teacher in Bottoms (2023).

Aubrey Plaza is always a joy to see, but in Emily the Criminal (2022) she kicks it into high gear with a performance fueled by the character's desperation and survival instincts.

Also anything with Jessie Buckley, including but not limited to Wild Rose (2018), The Lost Daughter (2021) and Romeo & Juliet (2021).

Robert Pattinson - The [EDIT] Lighthouse (2019). I was always put off him because of his links to the Twilight films, but his recent stuff has impressed me. My

You’re not alone in making that assumption. For years I thought of him as ‘that sparkly vampire boy’ and avoided his work. What a fool I was!

In the last ten years he made:

The Batman
The Devil All The Time
The King
The Lighthouse
High Life
The Lost City Of Z
The Rover

All are very good to excellent but the real jewel in his crown is called Good Time. Pattinson plays a cruel, selfish, bumbling, violent criminal asshole that, in the course of about 24 hours manages to destroy the lives of nearly everyone he encounters. It’s one of those adrenaline soaked crime films where you catch yourself rooting for the bad guy and say ‘wait a sec, this dude is a scumbag!’

I highly recommend it👍👍

Added to the watch list.

Don’t forget he was in Tenet too.

I really enjoyed The Lost City Of Z as well. As an Englishman you probably know it’s pronounced ‘Zed,’ lol, I had no idea until I did a bit of digging and reading. I’m certain that MILLIONS of Americans saw that movie and loved it but we always just say ‘Z…’.

Dang, why do you English guys beat up English like that😄

reply

The English really need to learn English 🤣

reply

Let’s just all learn Esperanto, how hard can it be 😜

reply

PS: I don’t recall seeing Tenet but as Pattinson is in it I’ll certainly check it out👍

A lot of people don’t understand it because it’s a typical Nolan film. Pattinson plays a supporting role, but is possibly the best thing in it.

Word of warning - whoever the sound editor was should be shot. The audio mix is terrible and a lot of the dialogue is muffled, which spoils the overall experience.

reply

Sheesh! These actors are ALL mush mouths.

I use captions pretty much all the time, all of these dorks sound like Stallone nowadays.
Can’t catch a fucking word.

Robert Pattinson wasnt in The Northman your thinking Alexander Skarsgard

reply

No, I was thinking of The Lighthouse (2019) 🤦‍♂️

Rich Evans - Space Cop

The absolute GOAT!

Jeremy Renner is doing the best work of his career in The Mayor Of Kingstown, in which he plays a political fixer and violent enforcer attempting to keep some sort of peace between various gangs and shady officials.

Professionally, he has the difficult task of being the main character amongst a sprawling and stellar cast and figures prominently in virtually every scene of a complicated series. That dude is tops!

I tend to prefer male stars, I generally overlook actresses. Most screenwriters, producers and directors are male so it makes sense that most actresses are bit players in male-driven movies and TV shows.

However, Aya Cash, an actress I’ve never heard of is excellent in The Boys as a Nazi superbaby antihero.
She hates everyone…gays, blacks, Jews etc. she is a really detestable character and I love a good villain!

No. For the most part, acting is acting in my opinion, i.e., as long as it's not noticeably bad acting then one acting performance is as good as another. The only performances that really stand out to me as being above and beyond ordinary professional acting are from Daniel Day-Lewis. The first time I saw him was in 2002 when I saw Gangs of New York in the theater, and he was good in There Will Be Blood too. I don't think I've seen any other movies that he was in.

everyone in Dune Part 2 but it was Timothee Chalamet who had the best performance this year so far
