Movies that have stood the test of time.

To me they are the movies that have been relevant for the past 60 years and will forever be relevant in one way or another. Of course a lot of her films have stood the test of time, like Secret Ceremony and Identikit, however they are not widely known or shown anywhere, they HAVE to be shown. Right now watching a movie made before 2007 on tv is as rare a sight as an alien from Mars, but up until a few years ago, she had SEVERAL movies that have stood the test of time. Most stars have one, if they are lucky. In my opinion her films that have stood the test of time are:

National Velvet

A Place In The Sun

Father Of The Bride

Cat On A Hot Tin Roof

Suddenly, Last Summer

Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf?

That's an amazing record to me, I mean how many Meryl Streep films will truly stand the test of time? 1? 2?

Excellent. I'd add "Giant" to the list, despite its overly ambitious themes. And--fame and name recognition alone--"Cleopatra." I know what you think of it--of the director--but it is her defining role, in so many ways.

It's not the same comparison. Streep only started in films in the late 70s when the Golden Era was over. Different times, different filmmaking techniques, topics, fashions. I'd probably choose

Kramer vs Kramer

The deer hunter

Sophie's Choice

Out of Africa

The bridges of Madison County

The Hours

Most of them more than 30 years ago at the beginning of her career. Her more recent films won't be regarded as classics until time decides it. I guess from the 2000s onwards her most successful film was Devil wears Prada, yet that one was just a box office hit but appreciated by blind fashionistas everywhere and also because it was based on a popular book. Not necessarily her best performance or her best film of those years.

I think I would add Giant and Cleopatra to that list. Giant was a great film and today it is today well remembered although mostly because of James Dean. Cleopatra will always be remembered, everything surrounding the film, the messy shooting the affair between its two stars, it failures and overblown budget will always be brought up.

but not the film itself!

I am an Elizabeth Taylor fan, but most of the films you've listed don't stand the test of time. Sorry.

Only these two:

Giant

and

Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?

That's it.

What is your definition of standing the test of time?

reply

Not becoming outdated. The other films you mentioned are products of their time and are usually forgotten. They will always be seen by her hardcore fans.

reply

Those films are not forgotten at all, and they are easily watchable today, Giant is not.

If you say so, Giant is one of the all-time great films. People are still posting reviews of the film:

Also, check out the number of votes:

Giant is among Top 5 films with at least 20,000 votes. Only that and Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? are timeless.

The other 3 films aren't worth bothering with.

Nice try.
