reply

I was being generous. With him, I normally I put "rock" in quotes. I also put "musician" I quotes.

reply

Sounds about right. He's such a sellout.

Around 25 years ago I think there was a video from that awful Psycho Circus album where it just keeps on showing Gene stick out his tongue OVER AND OVER AGAIN. Honestly Kiss were kind of cool for a summer in 1977 but their lack of real talent did them in. I think once the money train stopped rolling in their manager walked out the door they couldn't find him for months. Probably the worst "successful" band ever.

reply

They knew that the makeup was their gimmick because they had no actual talent. Without their makeup would anyone really remember them?

I was 14 in 1977, & admittedly was a huge fan then. The second rock concert I ever went to was Kiss at the Cow Palace on the day Elvis died. (Cheap Trick were the opening act) As the 80's dawned I started losing interest in them (especially after the trainwreck that was the "Unmasked" album!) as I began getting into much better bands. Frankly, Peter & Ace were the real talents in the band; once they'd left that really became obvious.

In hindsight, Kiss always seemed to exist in a strange musical kind of netherworld: too pop (especially in their marketing/promotional approach) to really be a straight up "rock' band; & yet at the same time, a little too "rock" to be a flat-out Pop band. I do still listen to & like the early albums, & do like some of their later stuff here & there. But it is way past time for them to hang it up already.

I think you hit the nail on the head as you're right, there were a lot of better bands such as AC/DC, Van Halen, The Clash, The Cars, Priest, Meat Loaf, Rush, Molly Hatchett, Toto, Styx, and on and on. The only problem back then was you'd hear a good song from these groups but you didn't know their name or if you did you didn't know what they looked like. That's all Kiss did, they glommed over their face with makeup and wore outlandish costumes, we saw them all over the place on tshirts, posters, album covers.

Back then I had no idea what the lead singer of Judas Priest looked like, same with The Clash, Rush, even Van Halen. To this day I don't know what any of the members of Molly Hatchett looked like. Heck, it seemed like every summer there'd be a pretty good song from a guy named Sammy Hagar. I had no idea what he looked like until 1983!

I disagree. There has to be some talent there for KISS to be around as long as it has. True, they were completely on top for a brief moment there - around 77 or 78 - then they quickly went down. By the time 1982 rolled around they couldn't get 5000 people to come see them. But they did reinvent themselves, sans makeup. And they hung around. They were huge again in 96 due to the reunion tour. That furor faded but the band kept going. I believe they're touring right now. There's no way they could have hung around for all these years with no real talent.

Scott Stapp at 700?!?!?

People think they're being original and clever...with this new revolutionary take on KISS. Really genius stuff. No, really.

KISS never claimed to be virtuosos of musical talent. They have always been pretty straightforward--a loud, unapologetic, hard-rockin' band with their own niche and style (a style that would eventually be copied by everyone from Motley Crue, to Twisted Sister, Buckethead, Marilyn Manson......). They're known for an amazing concert experience....(and having seen them 8 times over the course of 4 decades, I can attest to this).

Dave Grohl, when presenting KISS with an ASCAP Founders Award, spoke of just how much he was inspired by KISS. He spoke of having KISS posters on his wall, his room becoming a shrine.
"Forty years later, my love of KISS is still strong."

In an interview with Classic Rock & Culture, the legendary Nile Rodgers spoke of how KISS influenced him.
"Things clicked further when keyboardist Rob Sabino introduced Rodgers to Ace Frehley. "We went to see Kiss and went, "Holy s---, look at these guys!" Their fans were going crazy," he added. "So, Ace and I would sit down and have drinks together and people were just walking by him and I'm like, 'They were frenzied over you and now they don't even know you' and he was like, 'Yeah, that's how we want it.'"

Said Questlove of his influence from KISS: "I was obsessed".

Said Esquire Magazine: "It's not cool to like Kiss. But without them, today's cool music wouldn't exist."

Trent Reznor has confessed: "Kiss... changed my world. It seemed evil and scary — the embodiment of rebelliousness..."

KISS were early pioneers of Indie Rock, and practically revolutionized the concept of a Live album.
They were dangerous, and to kids discovering rock & roll in the 70's, they were gods--spitting fire and blood, during a heavy, loud and raucous set of fist pounding riffs and hooks.

Among the many bands that call themselves fans: Red Hot Chili Peppers, Nirvana, Soundgarden, Nine Inch Nails, Pearl Jam, STP, Smashing Pumpkins, Daft Punk....

Sure, KISS is old now...and it's trendy to bag on them. But their contribution to the legend, danger, volume and fun of rock & roll is undeniable....and by people a bit more clever than you idiots.

That sounds like lyrics to one of his songs.

Is it my fortune or my fame?
Is it my money or my name
Is it my personality
Or just my sexuality? Yeah yeah
What is my charisma?
What is my charisma? Yeah
Is it my body or my brain?
Do I drive you insane?
Is it the power of my touch?
Do you need me too much, too much, too much?
What is my charisma?
