The First Talented Mr Ripley Movie (slight spoilers)

I just watched Purple Noon, and was floored by how good it was!!! I really enjoyed the different take on things as well, especially the ending, i never saw it coming!!!
I remember reading parts of the book, but not all of it; i read the boat scene where he kills Dickie, and Purple Noon was very close to how that went down, really illustrating the desperation of falling into the water, and Tom's amateur attempt trying to handle the boat, almost tipping it. I love 60s movies, and the graininess contributed to the period piece feeling more as well. It just felt old. I also appreciated the Purple Noon script a bit more; it seemed more realistic in many ways. For example, how Tom captured Marge for himself (rather than turning gay), and the ending was better than the loose ends in the 90s film. I really want to read the entire book now, and then watch it again. Seeing how much the 90s film borrowed from it really puts things in perspective; Purple Noon is right up there!!!

Except, the ending is completely different than the book and the two other Ripleys. Highsmith disapproved of this ending and doing it this way is really unusual for the French. Scorcese, along with Miramax, was responsible for the re-issue of this movie back to the public in 1996. It’s great and it’s very much like La Piscine (The Swimming Pool). Both in the 60s with Alain Delon and the actor who plays Greenleaf. I think all three Ripleys excel in their own right and all are very different. But this one has the two - Greenleaf and Ripley - more aligned. Seeing them together, you can’t tell which is the odd man out. The Marge relationship is more intense. Also the Italian locales and interiors are spectacular. They are the closest to the actual time period as it was shot in 1959.
