Favorite Monkees song?

What's your favorite Monkees song? I have to go with "Papa Gene's Blues" followed by "Look Out (Here Comes Tomorrow)", "Randy Scouse Git" & "For Pete's Sake".

reply

Words, Laugh, and Take a Giant Step. And all the Mike songs. The Head soundtrack is also quite good.
Hmm, I guess that is a lot. It's tough to choose though, they're all so good.

i love all of michael nesmith's songs, like "papa gene's blues", "you just may be the one", "the kind of girl i could love", "listen to the band", "mary mary", "the girl i knew somewhere" but i also like some others like "look out (here comes tomorrow)", "daydream believer" and "words", pretty much anything with nesmith on lead vocal or anything written by him and the songs from the first season of the show.

Great choices abound throughout this list and it's been fun seeing how many Monkees fans are still out there. I've had a hard time finding many different tracks to add. "Pleasant Valley Sunday" is a stone cold classic and is the song I always point to when someone uses the old "They didn't play their own instruments" insult. (They were cast as a band and then actually BECAME one and this song is solid proof of their power as a rock band. The Monkees are still looked down upon for having been manufactured, even in this age of "American Idol". Ironic and downright strange.) I will always be a huge Nesmith fan and all of his songs brought up here are fantastic examples of his unique talent as a songwriter.

Micky Dolenz didn't give himself enough chance as a songwriter back in the day, offering only a handful of tunes. "Randy Scouse Git" is another classic. "Mommy and Daddy" is another good one and I urge everyone to check out not only the original but Micky's first, slightly more biting unreleased version available on the Rhino cd reissues.

Mine is Pleasant Valley Sunday! Savage attack on the suburbs with some great guitar effects at the end.

"Forget That Girl". My sister loved the Monkees and bought all their albums. I became a huge fan as well. This song takes me back to my childhood.

I love all the Monkees songs, but my favorite is "As We Go Along". Although we don't have a date set yet since I am trying to find a job, my fiance and I do have some details figured out for our wedding and "As We Go Along" is going to be our processional song.

reply

Gotta be "Daydream Believer".Its the ultimate Feelgood song-you can"t help but smile when you hear it..

I really love Sometime In the Morning, Shades of Grey, The Girl that I Knew Somewhere, and Valleri.

I tend to like the big hits, with one exception - Mike Nesmith's wonderfully psychedelic "Tapioca Tundra" which was the B-side of "Valleri". The guitar riff that opens the song remains a favorite to this day. Also, "Randy Scouse Git", especially for the line, "The four kings of EMI are sitting stately on the floor", a not-too-oblique reference to The Beatles.

Finally! It took over 50 posts before someone mentioned Shades of Grey -- tsk, tsk.

The Monkees is available on Netflix but, unfortunately, not on instant streaming.

has to be "WHAT AM I DOIN HANGING ROUND". possibly the best nesmith song ever.

reply

hmm, probably Pleasant Valley Sunday. :)

Oh, no...can't pick just one, lol! I pretty much like anything with Davy on lead vocals (he's not just a pretty face; he's got an amazing voice.) I also have recently gotten into the songs written and sung by Mike. He's a fantastic song writer and deserves more credit than he gets. These are my favs:

Sweet Young Thing
Look Out(Here Comes Tomorrow)
Listen to the Band
Valleri --> Awesome guitar solo on that one!
Little Bit Me, Little Bit You
Pleasant Valley Sunday
(I'm Not Your)Steppin' Stone

Daydream Believer is not only my favorite Monkees song, but is one of the greatest songs ever written.

reply

Agree with all those who chose Daydream Believer, one of the best pop songs ever recorded.

Valleri also rates highly.

As a solo act, Nesmith turned out two gems: "Joanne", and "Silver Moon".

reply

Yes, "Silver Moon" is a great song.
