Favorite Monkees song?

What's your favorite Monkees song? I have to go with "Papa Gene's Blues" followed by "Look Out (Here Comes Tomorrow)", "Randy Scouse Git" & "For Pete's Sake".

While I like a lot of their hits, my favorite right now is This Just Doesn't Seem To Be My Day. Great pop song from one of their better episodes.

"I Am The Greatest"

reply

Ahh ha ha!

I like him because he wrote many of his tunes by himself. But Mickey is cool one too, I had to pick "I'm A Believer" just for him.

"Shorty Blackwell! Shorty Blackwell! Be friends with me! Be friends with meeeeeeee!"

Gawd I love that song! I recently picked up the Monkees cd box set, and that song is my absolute favourite. It really shows the Beatles-esque direction that they briefly took, along with tunes like The Porpoise Song, Daddy's Song, etc.

You May Just Be the One.

And I love the video of them in it too...with the red shirts. Because they look so happy, and even Mike allows himself a little smile. It's like they could forget about all the controversy about them and just enjoy the song.

Somebody mentioned "Zor and Zam". It's not something you can listen to repeatedly, but it's a freaking excellent song!

I didn't read through all the replies, but I didn't see anyone mention "As We Go Along". That is my very favorite!!

Others, off the top of my head...

Porpoise Song
Auntie's Municiple Court
Daily Nightly
Goin' Down
Teardrop City
Shades of Gray
No Time
Star Collector
Tapioca Tundra
Can You Dig It
Tomorrow's Gonna Be Another Day
Randy Scouse Git

And of course there are the ones everyone knows...

Daydream Believer
Clarksville
Pleasant Valley Sunday

Nez's songs are always my favorite.

'Papa Gene's Blues'
'You Just May Be the One'

Also really like 'All Of Your Toys'.

"I think that's a lame idea... I just want you to know that." - Mike Nesmith

reply

I like just about all of the ones I'm familiar with. For now, my favorites are "For Pete's Sake" (I wish it was longer than 2 minutes!) and "Goin' Down" (Micky was the Man!)

While "Your Aunty Grizelda" is not my favorite, I did like it and thought it should be mentioned because it is the only Monkee song that makes me laugh - at the end with Peter's crazy vocal sound effects. LOL

"This isn't exactly the first grave we've dug. You still think I'm a catch?" - Sam Winchester

My absolute favourites are:

The Girl I Knew Somewhere
Pleasant Valley Sunday
Last Train To Clarkesville
Valleri
Daydream Believer
I'm A Believer

reply

Midnight Train anybody?

reply

Take A Giant Step. I have it in my 45 jukebox and it sounds great cranked.

reply

Here's a fairly timeless Top Five:

1. "Papa Gene's Blues" - First Nesmith effort, a great country-rocker. Nice percussion.
2. "Last Train to Clarksville" - One of the great Vietnam songs (yes it was!) disguised as mere "goodbye" song.
3. "Daily Nightly" - pSYcHedElic! Can't imagine how bizarre those unprecedented Moog sounds must've sounded to 1967 teenyboppers.
4. "Love is Only Sleeping" - Those weird time signatures startle me every time.
5. "Circle Sky" - 'Cause it simply rocks.

reply

Circle Sky!

Oh hell yeah!

Pretty much every song in "Head" was awesome.

reply

I don't know if it has been mentioned, but I really like Mommy and Daddy because it is so...like... IN YOUR FACE. It's a very dark and a "I can't believe they are saying this!" Kind of song.

I like Goin' Down, What Am I Doing Hangin' Round, Nine Times Blue, No Time, and Jericho and Pillow Time are just so funny. But I like so many mroe as well.

Yes, I MUCH prefer the darker, alternate lyrics to Mommy and Daddy. Great stuff!

After they've put you to sleep and tucked you safely down in your bed
Whisper Mommy and Daddy,
"Would it matter if the bullet went through my head?
If it was my blood spilling on the kitchen floor
If it was my blood, mommy, would you care a little more?"
Don't be surprised when they turn and start to cry
And tell your Mommy and Daddy, tell your mommy and daddy
Scream it to your mommy and daddy
They're living in a lie, a lie, a lie!
It's all a lie, a lie, a lie!
A lie, a lie...

reply

That was actually the original version Micky wrote, but they wouldn't allow it to be released so he wrote the other version that most people are familiar with. The one you mentioned is my second favorite song and the original release is my third favorite song.

I love all of the Monkees songs, but I tend to like the lesser known ones the best. My all-time favorite song (Monkees or otherwise since the Monkees are my favorite group and favorite tv show) is "As We Go Along". That is going to be the processional at my wedding.

reply

"As We Go Along" is also my favorite, hands down. Simply beautiful.

reply

I like so many already and one day I'll have to listen to all their songs but for now here's an update of my list of favs:

#1 is "You Told Me" because it really rocks. I love Mike Nesmith!

and

Pleasant Valley Sunday
A Little Bit Me, a Little Bit You
Valleri
For Pete's Sake
I'm a Believer
Goin' Down

"Listen here, chisel chest - okay. We were here first." - Ed Zeddmore to Dean Winchester

reply

"Sometime In The Morning," "Take A Giant Step," "Listen to the Band," "Zor and Zam (TV version)," "Circle Sky," "Daily Nightly," "Pleasant Valley Sunday," "That Was Then (This Is Now)" (not technically Monkees, but oh well), "Porpoise Song (Theme From Head)," "Can You Dig It?," "Ditty Diego," "Long Title: Do I Have To Do This All Over Again," "Your Auntie Grizelda," "Gonna Buy Me A Dog," "Saturday's Child," "What Am I Doing Hangin' 'Round?," "Tapioca Tundra," "Sweet Young Thing..." Heh... I was OBSESSED with the Monkees when I was... 6 or 7. But I still like those songs a lot. And I obviously like Mike a lot"

All good choices except for 'Buy me a dog'. Fun but hardly one of their best.

reply

Too many! I don't think there is a single Michael Nesmith song I don't like which makes it slightly difficult too but the main ones would be:

Pleasant Valley Sunday
Circle Sky
Porpoise Song
Love Is Only Sleeping
Mommy and Daddy
Regional Girl (not much love for Justus on here, I notice!)
Saturday's Child
Sweet Young Thing
You Just May Be The One
Don't Wait For Me
Listen To The Band
As We Go Along
Long Title: Do I Have To Do This All Over Again?
All Of Your Toys
Last Train To Clarkesville
St Matthew

...I think it would be easier just to say the ones I don't like! :)
