Favorite Monkees song?

What's your favorite Monkees song? I have to go with "Papa Gene's Blues" followed by "Look Out (Here Comes Tomorrow)", "Randy Scouse Git" & "For Pete's Sake".

reply

They made so many fabulous tracks it's almost impossible to choose one, as I have a new favourite every week!
Atm it's probably Star Collector. The last 2 minutes is just stellar.

Without a doubt, "For Pete's Sake". The lyrics fit in with those times of love and peace. Also really like "Cuddly Toy" (actually kind of risque for them) and "Valleri" (the intro reminds me of the Rolling Stones' "Satisfaction" ).

Yippee: "For king!"
Yappee: "For country!"
Yahooie: "And, most of all, for 10ยข an hour!"

"Pleasant Valley Sunday" and "The Door Into Summer". Beautifully bittersweet.

I have say I am bit disappointed seeing very bland and typical choices like Daydream Beliver etc. That being said it was also cool seeing obscure choices as well. Here are my faves.
Carlisle Wheeling
Circle Sky
St. Mathiew
Tapioca Tundra
Daily Nightly
Shortly Blackwell
Hard To Believe
Anytime, Anyplace, Anywhere
Long Title: Do I Have To Do This All Over Again
I live in Salt Lake City Utah I missed them when they were here (but I did see them in 1986 and 1996) though I am going to be in Vancouver Canada all September so I had tickets for the September 23rd show I was heart broken when the rest of the dates were canceled though I can see why they did. The tour manger was adding shows without telling them. Very uncool of him.

When life gives you lemons, make Limoncello.

Oh jeez, there are so many. I'm a Believer is one of my favourite songs of all time. I also really love Heart & Soul, Daydream Believer, It's Nice to be With You, Can You Dig It, Valerie, Last Train to Clarksville, I'm Not Your Steppin' Stone, That Was Then This Is Now, Pleasant Valley Sunday, the Theme Song, and I can go on and on..

reply

For me, it's gotta gotta GOTTA be "Can You Dig It?" That song is the absolute top of my list, especially the version with Peter on lead vocals.

reply

I just heard " I Want To Be Free" and "Shades Of Gray". They have become my favorite since they are so pretty. I do tire of hearing the popular ones, although they are good.

I've got so many favourites. I love 'Little Girl' from The Monkees Present album, the darker version of 'Mommy and Daddy', 'Sometime in the Morning', 'Take a Giant Step', 'Early Morning Blues and Greens', 'Randy Scouse Git', 'Love is Only Sleeping', 'Daily Nightly', the demo version of 'Midnight Train'.... I could go on and on :-)

reply

Is Mommy and Daddy risque? Why is it darker?

reply

It has grimmer lyrics:

released version:

Ask your mommy and daddy, "What happened to the Indian?
How come they're all living in places
With too much snow or too much sand?"
Tell your mommy, "I got a funny feeling deep inside of me"
Ask your daddy, "Is it really as bad as people make it seem?"

Wa ta tick it ta too too..

Ask your mommy why everybody swallows all those little pills
Ask your daddy why that soldier doesn't care who he kills
After they've put you to sleep and tucked you safely down in your bed
Whisper, "Mommy and Daddy would you rather that
I learned it from my friends, instead?
Do you think I'm to young to know, to see, to feel, or hear
My questions need an answer or a vaccuum will appear"
Don't be surprised if they turn and walk away
And tell your mommy and daddy that you love them anyway
That you love them anyway...
Give them a kiss
Love will set you free

unreleased version:

Ask your mommy and daddy, "What happened to the Indian?"
Ask your mommy and daddy to tell you where you really came from
Then mommy and daddy will probably turn and quickly walk away
Then ask your mommy and daddy who really killed J.F.K

Wa ta tick it ta too too...

Ask your mommy if she really gets off on all her little pills
Ask your Daddy, "Why doesn't that soldier care who he kills?"
After they've put you to sleep and tucked you safely down in your bed
Whisper Mommy and Daddy,
"Would it matter if the bullet went through my head?
If it was my blood spilling on the kitchen floor
If it was my blood, mommy, would you care a little more?"
Don't be surprised when they turn and start to cry
And tell your Mommy and Daddy, tell your mommy and daddy
Scream it to your mommy and daddy
They're living in a lie, a lie, a lie
It's all a lie, a lie, a lie
A lie, a lie...

Wow they were really pushing the envelope back then, I heard"Star Collector" was about sleeping with groupies.

reply

Yes, and "She Hangs Out" is about an oversexed underage girl. I read somewhere "Love Is Only Sleeping" was banned in some areas because the title sounded too suggestive.

"She Hangs Out" has a nice sound. It took awhile for me to like it. I betcha "She Hangs Out" was banned to in some areas. OMG this was a show for young people, I'm surprised they even let them play those songs. "I Wanna To Be Free" sounds like the guy only wants a "friends with benefits" relationship.

reply

Listen to the Band, What am I Doin' Hangin' Round (love Mike's accent), Love is Only Sleeping, Valerie.
