Remake: Who should play Harold + Maude?

If there were a remake, I know, God forbid, but anyway, if there were, I think Sam Riley (Control, Franklyn) would make a great Harold, or Lukas Haas, though he's getting a bit old for the role imo.

As for Maude, Doris Day would guarantee 'shock' value. Otherwise, a makeup free Helen Mirren would do nicely imo.

There should not be an attempt at a remake

I'd hate a remake so much. Just what we need, another manic pixie girl movie: senior citizens edition. You just know they'll try and make this into a quirky comedy tailor made for the instagram generation. And, oh god, the soundtrack. Unfortunately, I can't help but put my two cents in. This thread is just too interesting.

For Harold, I thought Paul Dano would have been good if he were younger. I think maybe that Ezra Miller kid from We Need To Talk About Kevin has pretty good range. He's the right age too. I'm not too familiar with the early 20's crop of Hollywood. The Craig Roberts kid has the right look, but not the right voice. I feel like the voice is kind of essential.

For Maude, I'd thought Betty White would be great too but, in an interesting twist, she's too old. Blythe Danner though. In a couple of years she'll be the same age Ruth Gordon was when she starred in the film.

I agree with either Day or Mirren as Maude. I was watching it this morning and was thinking abut a remake myself - thinking this generation ought to see this, but I wasn't sure if they would rent the original. Anyway, Wendie Malick would be great as Harold's mother with perhaps either Joe Jonas or Justin Beiber as Harold. Along with the shock value of Doris Day, it would be just as shocking to see either Beiber or Jonas in it as well.

I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by madness, starving hysterical naked.

If they had a remake, I'd go around fire bombing movie theaters!!!!!!

But if there was a remake when River Phoenix was alive, I'd say dye his hair dark to make a more sexy Harold and then Joan Plowright for Maude. Plowright was a crazy old bat in I Love You to Death.

Lots of actresses could play Maude. Harold can never be recast.

i have to agree emphatically. no remake, but i would wholly endorse a sequel. Maude and Harold. bud cort reprises his role and this time the younger maude is introduced.

i can believe an elder harold never really having gotten over the loss of maude.
