Things I hate about Mash:

* Margaret's CONSTANT YELLING, omg, STOP YELLING, YOU LOUD-MOUTH!!

* Klinger and his act. Be a man for the love of Mike...

* Sydney acting like some Messianic figure, pompous prick that he was

* Hawkeye and BJ always praising Sydney like he was some Messianic figure, that pompous prick...

* BJ's mustache

* How fat Charles got year after year

* How Frank was disrespected

* How racist Hawkeye was (Spearchucker, are you kidding me??)

* How pompous and self-righteous Hawkeye was

Feel free to add on...

So, pretty much the whole show then...

My top ten problems would have to include both of these at least twice.

How front line commanders were almost always portrayed as uncaring warmongers who didnt care one bit about the soldiers under their command. off the top of my head the only one i can think of who wasnt was the British colonel in one episode played by Bernard Fox. Alda just wanted to push an agenda and didnt care how unrealistic it was. sure there were probably many like that but to pain all of them like that was just ridiculous.

reply

I don't understand why Alda got so much control over this show. It didn't make it better.

reply

Margaret was pretty shrill. Her voice was hard to listen to.

reply

In its first run I watched it faithfully, but now that I've grown up I can't stand it. Pierce's and Hunnicutt's constant attempts to undermine authority come off as juvenile. Alda's and Farrell's ideology became more and more a part of sanctimonious sermonizing scripts.

reply

* Hawkeye being lecherous.
* Hawkeye and his agendas.
* Radar and his innocent act.
* Hot Lips fangirling over anyone of high rank.
* Sydney's amateur Freud routine.

reply

In the first season and maybe part of second, Radar was played as he was in the movie, sardonic and more worldly. I can understand how that would have gotten old quicker than the wide innocent shtick.

reply

That was weird how he regressed as well. I get that Gary wanted something different but the naïve kid shtick for so long also didn't work. The character still could have been allowed to progress again.

reply

They dropped Spearchucker pretty quick,the name and the character.

reply

Lucky bastard got sent back to the states early.

reply

I think it was because they knew they had too many characters. Spearchucker didn't seem to really have a place in the show.

reply

Actually, it was because they received complaints from people that there were no black surgeons in Korea. They demanded he be removed. The producers caved in to these racist demands and fired the actor.

reply

I forgot that story. Rare case of authenticity. As a kid to me it just always seemed they had one character too many.

reply

Not just that. They discovered having a black man amongst the doctors was historically inaccurate, since no black people were ever sent to Korea to help with the MASH units.

reply

Black men did serve as soldiers etc I just don't think any were doctors in MASH units.

reply

I disagree with * How Frank was disrespected

"Frank Burns Eats Worms" is one of my all-time favorite television lines!

reply

my parents used to like it, I was about 10 when it was showing

the thing I disliked about it, was that it was meant to be set in the army, but it was all about doctors talking around beds, with no actual army stuff

but I guess that's what you get for being about 10 at the time
