Why do people say this is the scariest movie they've ever seen?

I can understand people in 1973 saying it was the scariest movie they had ever seen at the time, but there are people who are into horror movies and weren't born at the time who say this. There are plenty of scarier movies than this. Most of them aren't very good, but they are scarier.

This question has been asked so many times here.

The atmosphere and the story make this movie unsettling in my opinion. I was 7 years old when the Exorcist came out. I didn't see the movie until I was a teenager. It was scary compared to most of the crap that came out in the 80s when I saw it.

I know it's a subjective question but what do you consider "scary"?

Not trying to be a smartass. I'm just curious.

Cheers😀

More jump scares in the dark with creatures with sharp teeth. Maybe if this had been done in the 2020s it would be scarier.

What is the scariest movie to you?

This movie should have won the Oscar.

I IMAGINE THE REALISTIC MANNER IN WHICH IT IS DEPICTED....MADE THE HORROR ELEMENTS STAND OUT SO MUCH...BAD COMPARISON BUT... KIND OF LIKE WATCHING PARANORMAL ACTIVITY....BORING ASS COUPLE BICKERING....THEN BOO!

I have a big DVD collection. This is the only one I put the other way so I can't see the name. To each their own, it's scary to me. Just watch other movies for a scare, jackass. Like the other movies that aren't good.

reply

Because it is, IMO of course. I'll be sure to post if I see one I find scarier.

I suppose it depends on the kind of horror that effects you the most.

The scenes of the teen girl vomiting pee soup and spinning her head around tent to get most of the media attention, but there's a lot more to the movie than the shock scares. It's really psychological horror at heart.

Some of the most powerful moments are the quieter ones, like when Karras first talks to the possessed girl. Creepy stuff.

The question posed at the end is horrific:

Did the demon win?

Reagan is fine but it came at the loss of two priests. One who was a man of great strength and weak body. The other of strong body but a weak faith.

reply

God won in the end. The girl was cleansed of the demons. Karras's faith was restored, and his sins forgiven

Well, in theory it was until The EXORCIST III when he had to be released from being in limbo between Heaven & Hell.. The EXORCIST III really was a true sequel to the 1st movie.. Everything else was garbage

agreed, good points.

Gen Z will always find a way to shit on the classic horror from yesterday because the Hollywood market is so saturated with one possession movie after another like this is all Hollywood knows how to make now in between 2nd & 3rd Rate MARVEL movies now.. 🤔 Now, a study was done shortly after The EXORCIST came out where the movie was shown to students: One without the sound on and one with the sound on and it turns out it was the Sound FX in this movie that scared people the most
