Were people really this stupid back in 1977

Tell you what, I've seen some characters portrayed as possessing low intelligence, but nothing compares to some of the ones in this move. Starting with the lead on down. That coffee shop scene between Tony and Stephanie was brutal. The idiotic pretentiousness of their conversation. I know that it was "a different time" and all, but damn. Just damn.... And Annette.... And Tony's entire family. And Tony. And Tony's male friends. I think that the only character that had any real smarts was Tony's boss.

And yet...judging by the comments people make on the Internet, those 1977 idiots were way smarter than anyone today!

They were the same types like the lot in The Jersey Shore series or any Bravo reality show.

Certainly the most idiotic thing said in this whole film is Annette’s pathetically weak retort to Tony…

TONY (to Annette): “You’s not exactly my dream girl or nothin’”

ANNETTE (eyeroll, borderline upset): “Oh yeah? Well if you lookin’ for a dream girl, go sleep and have a nightmare.” (Mic drop moment…)

Whoa, Annette. 🔥🔥🔥 That is some Oscar Wilde level wit there.

Believe it or not, people were no more stupid in the 1970s than they are now. In fact, young people in those days could read cursive writing, tell time on analogue clocks, count cash, drive cars with manual transmissions, and show up for work on time five days a week!
