I wasn't scared at all!

The only scare I got was a small jump scare when the dude is downstairs and he emerges.

Other than that, I didn't find a guy in a mask staring scary.

If I was 8 I'd find this movie scary but as an adult, nope, sorry.

This was a very scary movie in 1978 and a mega success for a small independent film.
It’s legendary in the slasher horror genre but tame by today’s standards.

*Spoilers*

I first saw this movie back in 1999 on VHS when I was 11, and I loved it! I wasn't scared, but it did have quite a few creepy parts. I did jump a little when Laurie is putting the key under the mat and you see The Shape and it gets really loud. I also felt really bad for Tommy. It's a great movie and I watch the series every year. :)

totally. ;)

it's well directed and the score theme is pretty catchy, but still even after the third viewing it's hard for me to see why this is so highly rated, considering in '78, people had seen psycho, black christmas, the texas chainsaw massacre, the omen etc. before.

And Rosemary's Baby, now that was a creepy movie.

Even in my age of 38 I have to stop the film in the middle and focus on something else really fast, this film's power works like a witchcraft, the music score can become very dangerous to our aura as well. Some people are more sensitive and some less. A lot of people can forget the energetic power of how films can impact us, it's not what is in the film, it is all about what is behind the images and sound that is driving it. A lot of little children can feel it very well, it is a matter of frequency we are exposed to.

Why would you expect a 40 year old movie to still be scary. If i watched it for the first time today it wouldn't scare me much either. But when i watched it as a kid back in the 80s when it was still fresh and original it scared the crap out me.I can't think of any movie from the 70s or 80s that would scare me today.Possibly the Shining. That woman in the bathtub scene creeps me out every time.

"Why would you expect a 40 year old movie to still be scary."

What does the age of a movie have to do with anything?

"But when i watched it as a kid back in the 80s when it was still fresh and original it scared the crap out me."

I first watched it, and all of the sequels that existed at the time, as a kid in the '80s and didn't find any of them even remotely scary. The same goes for other slasher movies. The only movies I found scary when I was a kid were some of the supernatural ones, like The Exorcist, The Shining, and Poltergeist. I found supernatural horror movies scary because an unseen supernatural threat could be anywhere; you can't run from it, hide from it, or fight it.

It's a generational thing. Us millennials are too desensitized. Gory things are seen on social media, ffs

You want a pat on the back? Last time I was scared by a horror film when i was 9 and saw parts of Return of the Living dead when they saw the cadavers head off and he is still running around and the first half of Friday the 13th part 5 in the same week. I had nightmares and sweats in bed, after that nothing and watch horror movies for pleasure.

You are a grown ass man I dont get the brag.

There is very little gore in the first Halloween. But gore should not be the main scare of a slasher film, its all about tension, suspense and John Carpenter directed the best slasher film bar none. Only Scream 1 has come close.

This coming from a big Friday the 13th fan. Halloween is the best all round slasher, but its sequels fall short of the first 4 and part 6 Friday the 13th films.

I wasn't ever really scared by this either - watching it as a teen in the 90s - but I still enjoyed it a lot.
