Ignore the low rating, this is a damn good film.

It has a solid premise, good characterizations, and an emphasis on storytelling not action sequences. Compare how this film is made to “action” films of the 21st century, night and day.

Everything on screen is real. The shark is superb. The suspense just builds and builds!
The original is incomparable, but this sequel is very very good and well-made.
You can probably skip Jaws 3D, but jaws and Jaws 2 are worth watching.

I agree. As you stated, the first is in its own league, but this is a fun sequel.

Agreed. I give it a solid 8/10. And unlike a lot of CGI shark films, the kills feel much more real. There are several great scenes and some superb direction.

First half is poor to middling. Second half could be better although it still improves on the second half. But it's fairly good overall and definitely has it's moments.

Having nobody concerned about or aware of the shark in the beginning makes the movie dull as hell. And after Brody discovers the burned corpse of the victim of the boating accident it gets kind of silly (They were expecting to find a burned corpse anyway.) Yes of course it makes sense for Brody to want to take action immediately once he realises what might be going on. But it gives him almost nothing to do in the first half.

Yes the audience might feel a bit of suspense due to being fans of the first movie and knowing what the main characters don't know yet. But the movie suffers from the plodding, disaster movie type set up.

Music is great and the 2nd unit photography looks tremendous. It seems they got even more complex shots than the original movie and managed to maintain continuity of picture quality even better. The young cast are generally very good too. But there's just so much dull crap that feels like filler. The gala opening, the bar scene. Just crap.

It is just not as good a yarn as the original movie. Inevitable to some degree, But the movie just feels very perfunctory in places up front. The score for this movie being 60% of the originals is about right. But to give it credit it remains one of the best sequels of a summer movie franchise yet made.

I really never understood the low ratings.
Only explanation I can come up with is that too many make the mistake to expect it to be better than Jaws, which is flat out not possible, like breaking the laws of physics. Perfection is an absolute state, after all.

While I think the movie would have been stronger with less in-your-face shark shots, I found the story to be solid and gripping and I liked the teenage cast, to be honest.

Jaws 3 had its good points. They rightly had Shawn being afraid of the water and then we got to see him conquer that fear. And the storyline and action was good too. The death of the baby shark scene was handled well and was sad. The only thing I thought was wrong was making the shark so big and not having an explanation for that, especially since in real life there has never been found a 35 foot shark. It would have been fine to keep it at 25 feet just like the other shark since this was a different situation it and the humans were in.

I agree!

JAWS 2 is a good movie but, unlike JAWS, which was primal, it’s simply a monster movie. There’s good acting, a decent story, solid cinematography, and some good suspense. However, it never comes close to the all-encompassing terror that the original unleashed.

reply

Agreed. I rate Jaws excellent (10/10) and Jaws 2 very good (8/10).

Not bad for a sequel. Actually a pretty solid film. But I can't help missing the presence of Quint and Matt Hooper.

Of course this is a totally different story and this time Chief Brody had to go it alone. Roy Scheider does a great job at reprising the "wary of water" Chief. I can relate to that fear. I tend to stay in the shallow end of the pool myself and I avoid oceans at all cost!
