She was supposed to be 18? I would guess she had no sunscreen on in any of the outdoor scenes and never wore it.

The actress who played her was in her mid-20's as was the actor who played Danny. It's not uncommon for people who obviously aren't teenagers to play teenagers (John Travolta in Saturday Night Fever was 23 playing a 19 year old).
