Yeah, this one has the least amount of changes, for sure. I can kind of just 'deal with' Star Wars Special Edition, but Return of the Jedi must absolutely be watched in its original form. What they did to the Jabba's band scene is unforgivable.

reply

What they did to the Greedo/Maclunkey scenes is also unforgivable!

4K80 is coming one day. When it’s finished that will be the version to watch.

The shuttle scene destroyed the pacing of the final chase. And it also ruined the introduction of Imperial shuttle at the beginning of Return of the Jedi. Totally unnecessary addition.

Did anyone in the history of cinema ever watch this scene https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TT2dKct533Y and complain that the movie didn't show how Lawrence travelled from Cairo to the Arabian desert? I think not! And yet Lucas seemed to think people would be confused about how Vader got from Cloud City to his Star Destroyer without showing him requesting his shuttle (politely), then walking to his shuttle, then flying in his shuttle, then landing in his shuttle, then disembarking from his shuttle. SMH…

I remember back in the day how excited I was when the SE films were coming out and waiting to see each new thing which popped up. When this scene came along I absolutely loved it, anything new was exciting!

While I fully understand now about how it ruined the pacing of the scene and the impact of seeing the shuttle for the first time in ROTJ, back then it gave fans something new and exciting, something they felt their ticket had paid for when there was so little changed in ESB otherwise. So from a production side of view I see why they did it.

It's like they snuck in something quick just to keep the ESB SE interesting for a little longer towards the end.

I wouldn't mind seeing the original versions but you can't really do it legally unless you accept a bunch of fullscreeen DVDs or buy a lasordisc player.

or down load the de- specialized editions, someone upscaled the originals to 4k, very impressive

reply

He said legally.

There are also the 4K77 and 4K83 versions, and soon there will be the 4K80.

The question is if it's illegal or unethical to download a HD movie if you own the DVD. There is AI upscaling software that can turn your old DVDs into HD.

BTW, the 2006 Limited Edition DVDs with the theatrical bonus discs aren't fullscreen. They're widescreen, only not anamorphic. So you have to stretch the picture on a modern TV. Those are essentially the same versions as the 1993/1995 laserdiscs in DVD format (as such, they also have no surround sound but only 2.0 channel stereo).

reply

Yeah, and they're awesome. Not perfect, but they work just fine for me.
