The UFO phenomenon is so rife at the moment, and Drew Barrymore should star as they meet ET again, and he takes her on a ride to his home.
That would be fabulous to watch.
This is one of those movies where the story was complete. No sequel required.
shareAgree, sequel can be a lot of fun. I can think of many good storylines they can pick for sequel. Maybe E.T. need help from Drew Barrymore to saved his own planet.

Actually, this kinda did get a "sequel," just in the form of an Xfinity commercial.
shareHonestly, the end of E.T. has the power to make me almost cry every time. The knowledge that, in that world, E.T. leaves and Elliot will never see him again, drives a lot of that feeling.
On the other hand, I've been 'campaigning' for a few years for Spielberg to take us into outer space on the big screen before he retires; something he hasn't done so far. All his movies take place on Earth and bring space elements to us. So an E.T. sequel would be the chance for him to take us into space. Henry Thomas and Drew Barrymore are still acting also.
But I feel that a sequel would ultimately not live up to the expectations that most people would have and it'd be an expensive flop like Indiana Jones 5.
