How is this one considered a classic or the best?

All the sequels are better.

It's because it was so different from anything else at the time it was released.

I have always enjoyed the 3rd, and the 4th is just fun, but the first was innovative and Freddy is still scary and less of a joke.

Which is what people like from Freddy that he can be strangely horrifying and yet entertaining at the same time. Craven was mostly aiming for a strange dream terrifer but the later had a nice blend which the fans liked as well. Yea,
His name sells it and he is the creator strangely, but if it wouldve been up to him he wouldve ended it after the 1st and how much fun would that wouldve been and do you really think he wouldve been considered one of the greats if they had just settled for that just one horror film?

reply

I frankly don't like his original ending cause I would hate for the whole movie to be a dream and for Freddy to not be real in the movie's world. Not to mention the whole movie being a dream makes the whole movie pointless.

reply

Yea I mostly believe Craven lucked into this being an all-time horror classic. He had a lot of unforeseen and unwanted help.

I'm not big on this franchise, but everyone talks about part 3 as being so great. Hell it even has a 74% fresh rating on RT which seems unheard of for me being a slasher sequel. Why does everyone love 3 so much? I've seen the first one and parts of 2 and parts of the rest. Freddy seems more campy and less scary as the franchise goes on.

reply

not the 2 one and not 5 and not 6

I find it a pretty thrilling movie all round. I would also guess that Johnny Depp being super famous now makes it kind of special in a way.

Since the late 80's I always found much better filmmaking in most of the sequels in this franchise. As kids back then when they were being released I dont remember we ever compared these films, they were all great, and that was it, certainly not putting original or sequel on pedestal or something. The humour of the sequels definitely added a lot more horror, the more funny it seemed the scarier, cause the so-called humour was demented, disturbing and chilling down to the bone, that's what humour usually does in horror films, it's a balancing technique. It certainly didn't seem intended to conjure up a smile or a haha laughing moment, but the exact opposite, that's one of the reasons why the original is easier to watch for me in terms of scares than the sequels that went much deeper into the depths of fear. As to what is better, they're all great, but personally I can't recall a single franchise where the sequels have not been somehow superior in terms of quality, the same goes for this one as well. There's usually a great improvement as they go on. I think The Dream Master is my most favourite, it's Renny Harlin's film, which was the most popular of the franchise at the time.

The original was new, fresh, and scary — plus it was the only one to successfully walk that twilight area between dreams and reality. (Wes Craven’s New Nightmare was able to mostly recapture that twilight area.) The later sequels drew attention to the dreams as set pieces, effectively negating any suspense and terror. Oh, and Freddy Krueger becoming a wiseacre didn’t help.

The first one was the best, by far, and it was also the only one that successfully walked that twilight area between dreams and reality. I remember seeing the original in the theater in ‘84 and not only was it new and fresh, but it was also scary as hell. Subsequent sequels telegraphed every dream sequence, and, most fatally, turned Freddy into a wiseacre. The scares, suspense and atmosphere sold out to box office and merchandising.

The original is great, but Wes Craven’s New Nightmare was able to return the series to the same kind of mind-bending dream logic that propelled the first one.

I find it pretty scary.
