Did this film coin the word 'Nerd'?

Be honest.. and if you are under the age of 40, don't even pretend you know the answer... I think the proto-typical 'nerd' with thick glasses, floods, pocket protector... was invented/created for this film, along with the name. I'm not saying nerdy guys didn't exist, but i'm saying, the depiction of them as a distinct entity did not... thoughts?

Im replying 9 years later and 2 and half years shy of 40 and even i know it was a 1950's thing you stupid idiot.

No it didn't. I was there at the time and I'm telling the truth. The word nerd and the description of a nerd was around long before the movie came out. "ROTN" capitalized on it.

I personally would have preferred the term "Spaz" had caught on instead to describe socially awkward dorks. For those who don't know that term means, this is a Spaz:

I’m over 40 and the OP is an
asshole. “Nerd”’ has been in the lexicon longer than “geek” or “dweeb.” But not nearly as long as “bully,” the source of these pejorative labels.

Every bully is a fucking coward.

reply

No, there has been a candy named Nerds and thats where the term was coined

According to Online Etymology Dictionary, the word is an alteration of the 1940s term "nert " (meaning "stupid or crazy person"), which is in itself an alteration of "nut" (nutcase).
