A much better Richard E. Grant film is "How to Get Ahead in Advertising" - now THAT is a true masterpiece!

I guess it's down to personal taste. I adore Withnail and kind of expect everyone else to. I once showed it to a friend that had never seen it. He is intelligent, film-literate, and has a great sense of humour... But he HATED it, the downbeat tone just leaving him cold.

shareIt seems some people simply do not get the point of art in films. But I can see how this movie might not appeal to some people. Firstly, some people are very stupid. Secondly, some of these emotions have to be lived to make any sense. And thirdly, see the first.

Ignore the troll, millions of people love this film it's the most unusual of comedies you could ever hope to find. How often do you find a mature comedy?
Sure we have Family Guy and all, but young people watch that aswell. Withnail and I is so gritty and political it's almost like a comedy designed for grownups, which I love.
And I don't think there has EVER been another comedy with a sad ending, and if there was it would be one in a million.
It's all subjective, obviously, and I do think it's a very good film but I'm a bit puzzled by the iconic status it's been given.
