VASTLY OVERRATED

People go on about this "fillum" being a cult masterpiece, but now I've just seen it, I think it's $hite... and BOOORING.

A much better Richard E. Grant film is "How to Get Ahead in Advertising" - now THAT is a true masterpiece!

But this? No.

And Paul McGann shouldn't be allowed to act in anything, he practically RUINED Doctor Who.

And if you all don't agree, you can fhuck right off.

How does it have a sad ending? The nice one lands a role and (presumably) moves out of poverty while the bitchy, do-nothing user is left to wallow in his self-created misery. Or are we supposed to idealize their lifestyle -- the one they are are desparate to escape -- at the start?

"Someone has been tampering with Hank's memories."

Agreed. Withnail is funny, charming and he’s far from evil so I still pity the guy at the end, but I don’t make excuses for him.

He’s a terrible friend and self-absorbed narcissist, and he’s ultimately choosing to destroy himself.

That's your opinion. The world would be a boring place if we all liked the same things.

What The_Strangeler said: "Withnail & I is a masterclass in writing and acting."

It's just very funny, very well-written and very well-acted. When I first saw it I thought it overrated, but I've just rewatched for the first time in years this afternoon, and I was laughing out loud. A pleasure.

WHERES THE WINE?? WE JUST RAN OUT

It seemed to sink almost without trace when first released, then had a revival in the mid-90s (when I saw it in a London cinema) and it became a kind of cult classic.
I think it's great. I am inclined to believe people from outside Britain would fail to get it, though I would have thought the same about Monty Python and that does have admirers outside the UK.

Yank here. This film has more replay value than almost anything.
