People go on about this "fillum" being a cult masterpiece, but now I've just seen it, I think it's $hite... and BOOORING.
A much better Richard E. Grant film is "How to Get Ahead in Advertising" - now THAT is a true masterpiece!
But this? No.
And Paul McGann shouldn't be allowed to act in anything, he practically RUINED Doctor Who.

Seriously? McGann actually made a wonderful Doctor Who at the time (1996) and would have been just as good in the series---the only reason his take on Dr. Who didn't reboot as a complete series was because the movie was co-produced by either an American or Canadian studio and they wanted to take over the production of the series completely. The British company who co-made it said nope, and so the series wouldn't start again until 2005. So it wasn't even his fault the series didn't re-start back then--do the research.
Saw WITHNAIL & I some years ago, after reading about how it had gathered cult following over the years (it apparently was pretty much ignored when it came out in Britain and it was a pretty good, idiosyncratic film---not your usual/typical British drama---real eccentric in its own right. Liked it,too, plus I liked Richard Grant with his weird looking self.
Closeted gays, pseudo intellectual douchebags and anglophiles adore it for some odd reason. People that are not desperate to appear "clever" to strangers are not as impressed.

Surprisingly you don't speak for the whole world and let me tell you there is a huge amount of love for this movie out there.
I didn't say I hated any of those people. Just that those are people who love the movie. I have a friend who acted in a stage version of it. The stage version is not any better but at least it's not any worse. So that's something.
