I suggest you watch Malena. Giuseppe Tornatore also directed that film.

I'd have to agree with you half way.
Malena, although a great movie had a bit of a darker twist (no spoilers needed). I've also struggled recomending a movie like this. I believe it stands alone. When I recommend it, almost always people come back wanting me to recommend something else for them. It's not easy. If I did have to, I'd probably go with "The road home" but then again I'm a Zhang ziyi fan so my opinion might be biased.

I recently saw a Hong Kong movie called 'Mr Cinema' starring Anthony Wong which has similar themes.

It's about a mainlander from China who moves to Hong Kong and is a projectionist at a cinema that shows only mainland movies. It's really about Hong Kong's history over the last 50 or so years but has a very touching love story in there too. It does have lots of pro-socialist themes but if you can get past this it is a really nice little movie with some wonderful performances.

Of course it does not match the magic of Cinema Paradiso but then, what does?

Adrian: Why do you wanna fight?
Rocky: Because I can't sing or dance.

Hey, I saw that movie recently too :) I'm guessing it was at UT.
I saw Mr Cinema because I read that it was like Cinema Paradiso and I too wanted to find another movie that was similar. I'm coming to accept the fact that there will never be anything like it.

What did you think of Mr Cinema? I thought the love story between the two young'uns (Karen Mok and the other guy) was very touching and all the performances were first rate.

If you want more Tornatore, I suggest 'The Legend of 1900'. Like CP, scored by Morricone. Like Malena, and in some ways, Cinema, not a typical Hollywood feel-good, happy-ever-after-ending kind of film. But very human, even though the 'legend' may seem far-fetched to some.

In my opinion, Tornatore is an artist whose medium is film.

Also, check out "The Red Violin".

The first half of "The Legend of 1900" is a worthwhile film. But action peaks halfway through. Then it turns into a different film, a fantasy about the philosophical question: If a tree falls in the forest and there is no one there to hear it, does it make a sound? This question will have greatest significance to artists and those who support the performing arts. It's a cult film in this respect. Not a bad film, either, but a film that is also long and drawn out.

Splendor by Ettore Scola is very similar to Cinema Paradiso. They are even from the same year or just one year apart. Unfortunately, Splendor is very hard to find.

I would say that Once Upon a Time in America is similar in structure, as it's about a man going back to where he grew up and reminiscing about the past. Amazing movie too, one of my favorites.

"hijo de la novia" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0292542/ or, sun of the wife. A very human story, argentinian movie. Was nominated for oscar.
