I can see why most hardcore Friday the 13th hates this - it has a story

Ok, the story is pretty dumb, but at least there is more than just Jason killing people in this movie. Compared to other Friday the 13th movies I think this one is pretty decent and I am surprised by the low score.

Honestly, it's difficult for me to get much out of any of the Friday films, the horror is stagnant. I actually enjoy Parts 6 & 8 the most because at least they try to make some fun out of it, Freddy Vs. Jason would then capitalize on this.

I dunno, I think while it might not be the best of the 80s entries...I still really like it, and I think that everything that followed was terrible.
"Jason Goes To Hell" and so on...they got worse and worse. And "Freddy Vs. Jason" was awful. I'm sorry, but that's how I feel. It had that stupid early-2000s look and feel, where everything is way too melodramatic, the CGI effects were terrible (as CGI often is), and it was far too comedic. And I can't buy that Jason and Freddy exist in the same fictional universe, its too much of a stretch.

Honestly though I don't think you could have a vs movie without it being comedic. I don't think a vs movie could ever be TRULY scary, it's all about the action.

About Freddy and Jason existing in the same universe, I remember a Freddy's Nightmare episode where a guy was dressed like Jason for a Halloween party, so that coudl suggest that in the Freddy universe that Fri 13 was just a movie and Jason was a just a ficticious character, but I dunno sometimes ppl DO dress like REAL seriel killers.

They became part of the same universe once New Line bought the franchise.

I hated it cause it was boring that simple

It's OK, and it has some really badass moments. Some things bothered me though:

I didn't like that Jason was in such a populated area letting people live. It's contrary to all the other films as Jason normally kills every person he sees.

The scene where he lifts his mask to scare the punks is stupid.

I loved Hodder's performance, but I hate the look of Jason in this one. After the badass look Jason sported in The New Blood, his look here is disappointing....

"Don't conform, be like us...."

That didn't really bother me. I mean Jason is territorial, he kills ppl who come onto his turf, and he feels Crystal Lake IS his turf. As someone point out, I think he was after the guy and girl b/c he first encountered them at Crystal Lake and he associated them with there.

The other ppl in NY meant nothing to him.

I know he was killing ppl right and left at the rave in FvJ but that's b/c he thought he was under the instructions of his mother.

Most people hate it-fans and non fans-because it is truly terrible

It's common psychology. If you're zeroed in on by thugs, a biker gang or mafia in an area, you won't get them off your back by explaining your case and pleading for mercy but must do what they want - falsely accused or not. It's basic thuganomics. It's like extortion and stalking in one. But Jason is more dark and has evolved it to squarely stalking and killing. All people that were stalked were connected to his turf.

The scene where he lifts his mask to scare the punks is stupid.
It was 1988-89. That kind of humor are often seen in movies from that decade and since as well. There are many many worse examples where movies are self-aware and making pun of themselves in todays scripts. I don't like self aware movies either, but that was really benign.

IMO this is the best look supernatural Jason ever did get. Wet, rotten, smelly. Awesome look and greatly acted out by Hodder. Truly befitting a supernatural monster for the 8th installment in the series.

Also look at how the scenes are lit and framed. Different angles, different light. There are so many iconic scenes in this movie. Jason standing on the boat, Jason entering the sewers, Jason on the roof. Very good cinematic work of art. Not many slashers are framed this well. Visually it's top notch and doesn't degrade over time as later sequels movies with CGI did.

That dosen't make it good. Just saying they made sh!t at that time and that was "common" doesn't make it better.

No, its actually very lazy made. Not real looking a all. Jason was best looking in parts 2-5 but then got just lazy and unreal looking. Of course its unreal character but still its not good looking. And acting was terrible too. Just as make up it got awful and made by left hand in 6th part. Complete garbage. Gore scenes are also stupid, lazy and censored. Movies style is from some Police Academy, sh!tty screenplay, amateur cinematography and stupid and idiotic plot.

... it's a guy in a jumpsuit and a hockey mask.

What "look" are you talking about?

They marketed this film as Jason being in Manhattan. HE does get there but its a slow & boring ride. Had most of the film taken place in New York they would of had a hit. The audience felt cheated and we were.

reply

No more story than any other Friday.I don't hate it but IMO it's the weakest sequel. The writers lack of respect for the audiences IQ was evident and insulting.Jason managing to float off of a lake and on to an ocean.Asking people to suspend their disbelief is one thing but this is just asking them to be stupid.

Jason magically finding his victims in New York even though they split up and went in different directions.Unless he had GPS tracking on them i don't see how that's possible. No amount of story would make up for the ridiculous plot holes in this movie. Also worst Friday ending ever.

This doesn't have any more of a story than the others. I didn't like this film because of the blatant teleporting of Jason.

The thing just plain blows! It's the worst of the Paramount Fridays, and it's got a gawdawful story!

Agreed. A large portion of the fans give part 5 so much flak just because it wasn't the real Jason. I say WHO GIVES A FLYING F$%$???

The movie was entertaining! So if it was real Jason would it all of a sudden be good? That's their rationale.

But no, Part 8 is the crap king of the paramount Friday films. However I'd rather watch Part 8 than over Jason X and the remake anyday. FvsJ is good and although not the best friday film, JGTH definitely beats out part 8.

Part 8 could have been good if they let the director have the budget he needed. He said he wrote a huge script that took us to all the NY landmarks and the majority took place in NY rather than the other way around. That would have been awesome, but no we're left with this crap and a teleporting Jason.
