Did the Knight have telepathic powers?

Or something similar? I re-watched this after many years and in the final challenge scene I caught something maybe I hadn't realised. When Indy first walks into the cave and is attacked by the Knight who givesup immediatley, he looks at Indy for a second or 2, then smiles, gives him a warm reception and says 'I knew you'd come, but my strenghth has left me''. Then when Donovan + Elsa walk in, the music turns sinister, the Knight looks at Indy who is looking at the 2 villains in disgust. The knight then gives Donovan a cold blunt answer. Point is, the Knight is clearly reacting differently to Indy than to Donovan and Elsa, who he's never met before. It's as if he has some telepathic powers or some other supernatural ability to detect who is a good person and who is evil at heart?

reply

Yeah, he always seemed to have some psychic abilities to me. It could also explain how he knows modern English.

I'd always thought it'd be a bit cooler if he didn't speak English, but could converse with Indy in Latin. Oh well

I'm going to say no. The Knight originally took a swing with his sword to fell Indy. If he was psychic, he'd have been aware of his arrival long before Indy showed up. He also incorrectly thought that Indy was a "knight" sent to replace him.

I just think the knight was a man who was very good at sizing up people. Once he had a good look at Indy, he realized that Indy was a good person. I also think the knight knew Donavan was evil when he saw Indy's reaction to seeing Donavan.

I too noticed the Knight looking over at Indy frequently once Donovan and Elsa entered the room. I'm guessing that the Knight was thinking that Indy could be the one to finally choose the correct Grail, there's something about him...

reply

Regarding the OP's question though, dude's centuries old. He doesn't have to be telepathic to just read the room.

reply

Consider this:

Indy is the first person to enter that room in centuries. Which means he passed the 3 test and is worthy of the honor to guard the grail. Donovan and Elisa entered the room moments after Indy did. Should be pretty clear to everyone that they sat back and watched how Indy passed the test, and now are just there to steal the grail from him. Which to the Knight would mean they were not worthy of it.

Good point. Plus, it's not that big a cave - the characters can communicate by talking loud.

Maybe the knight heard everything, and was already impressed by Indy's "leap of faith."

Then he heard the sand and gravel being scattered and guessed Indy had just exposed the bridge. He'd know that Donovan and Elsa did NOT take a leap of faith.

reply

We don't know which means I label it a plot hole

reply

I thought it was pretty self-explanatory. In the Knight's mind, Indy bested him in combat therefore he proved himself a worthy successor. That's what he has been waiting for centuries (I knew you'd come). Far from being telepathic. He was hoping Indy would take up the mantle and release him.

Definitely not a plot hole but that was already confirmed.

reply

Well explained!

reply

That's funny considering he fell backward cause he was old and out of shape. Indy didn't do much of anything to him.

reply

He didn't need telepathic powers. Indy enters into the room first as the man who must have passed all the tests. The knight, not expecting anyone else to follow, is ready to bestow Indy the honour of guarding the HG, which as the knight says is down to bravery. So immediately anyone else entering the room would be deemed less brave and not worthy. Not to mention Indy is in the middle of explaining something to the knight only to go silent when the other 2 enter. The knight would have good reason to feel suspicious.

reply

Yes, I noticed that the knight was very likely suspicious of the two people who interrupted Indy's explanation, the way he kept looking from them to him and back again, as if trying to figure out their relationship to each other.
