I've said the same thing for years. I was 14 years old in 1987, so I remember it pretty well. And I have to say that overall, it was the best year for movies in the last 3 decades.

I was 17 during that summer. I just graduated from HS and the only blockbuster film I really enjoyed that time of year was INDIANA JONES AND THE LAST CRUSADE. I was always a Indy fan. Batman..eehh I didn' care for it. I prefered Lethal Weapon(1987). License to Kill was one of my favorites.

reply

There was also the James Cameron film, The Abyss.

reply

I missed the Indiana Jones film back in 89 i was 7 but i did see Ghostbusters 2 and Batman. For some reason i didnt even know about Indy 3 till VHS.

reply

Also, "UHF" and the sleeper hit "Parenthood".

reply

Lock Up, with Sylvester Stallone :)

Karate Kid III, a film so bad it's very re-watchable.

Yeah, summer of '89 reminded me of summer of '84: Ghostbusters, Karate Kid, Temple of Doom, Gremlins, Police Academy, Revenge of the Nerds, Last Starfighter.

reply

Gosh, McFly-31. You sure got that right. Both years were among the greatest in my memory for awesome films.

I was 16 for the summer of '89 and was going into my junior year of high school. That was a pretty darn good year for films. I think the 80's movies will never be topped and I am so greatful that I came of age during that time period. There was "Empire Strikes Back" in 1980; "Raiders of the Lost Ark" in 1981; "E.T.", "The Thing" and "Blade Runner" in 1982, and so on. Great films to watch growing up as a kid. And the mid to late 80's action flicks like "Lethal Weapon", "Die Hard", "Commando" & "Predator" just ruled.

I will say, as good as 1989 was, nothing - and I mean NOTHING - can compare to 1984, which, IMHO, is the best movie year of all time. Just take a look at some of the movies that came out that year:

I remember 1994 was great as well, with the release of "Pulp Fiction", "Forrest Gump" and "The Crow". Still, 1984 will go down in my mind as the best.

Gosh, I miss the good 'ol days.

reply

Yeah, '84 and '94 were both great. '94 was a great music year as well.

reply

Oh, absolutely. 1994 I can remember being a great year to be alive. The music, the movies, and I was in college too. Some great times.

reply

I always ALWAYS talk about how great that year was for movies!!!! All a GREAT time! I love it. Glad to see somebody else enjoying it.

reply

Yeah, I was 12 during the summer of 1989, and I honestly don't remember a summer since then being so stacked! I saw Batman and Indy numerous times during this summer, and snuck in to Lethal Weapon 2!

I was talking to a friend recently about how with Dark Night and Indy 4 this summer, it's like 1989 all over again!

"But hey, I'm not telling you anything you don't already know."

I was 20 and remember it well, don't forget Uncle Buck, one of my all time favorites. Ahhh...to be young again when music was still good. Movies today are fine but the music SUCKS!

I remember in the summer of 1989 when Batman and Lethal Weapon 2 were playing at Mann's Chinese Theatre on Hollywood Blvd. while right across the street they were showing the re-release of Disney's Peter Pan. Other theatres in that general area were showing When Harry Met Sally and Dead Poet's Society. Disney's Honey I Shrunk The Kids was also out in the summer of 1989.

reply

Wow those were the days! I'd trade my left nut to go back to the 1980's and see decent films in the cinema.

reply

Yeah one of the most entertaining slate of summer blockbusters ever 1989 (and BTTF 2 was released in November).

reply

It was a perfect time for films. I flew into Kissimmee in Florida at 11.00pm. As I couldn't check into my motel until 09.00 the following day, I decided to go to an all-night theatre that had Lethal Weapon 2, Batman, Casualties of War and Uncle Buck. I watched them in that order. Left theatre at 07.30 for a great American breakfast and after that, checked into the motel where I slept till noon.

reply

I wish I could have been around for summer 1987 releases and wasn't 2 in 1989. The 3 films I want to see at the cinema before I die are Die Hard, Lethal Weapon and Heat.
